Corporate Social Responsibility Business Paper

The following is the information for my paper. It is a university undergraduate paper, consisting of approximately 2000 words each. I need this completed by Friday morning (Eastern Standard Time). Length: about 2000 words each. Topics for Essay # 1 1. Describe and explain the evolution of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). How does the “new CSR” that emerged in the 1990s differ from forerunners such as philanthropy and “old” social responsibility of business? What economic, social and political changes from the 1970s-1990s might account for the changes in the nature of CSR? To what extent can it be seen as cynical effort to co-opt or deflect critics of business (as left-wing critics of CSR suggest) or as a craven or misguided effort to appease critics of business (as right-wing critics of CSR suggest)? 2. Discuss the “business case” for CSR. What is the relationship between a firm’s social responsibility (social performance) and its profitability? How might one affect the other, and what factors might affect both? Why does Vogel doubt that CSR is profitable for most firms? How cogent and empirically well grounded are those doubts? For what kinds of firms is the business case for CSR most (and least) salient? 3. Compare and contrast the following approaches to civil regulation of business: (i) negative publicity/boycotts, (ii) certification systems (“NSMD” regulation), (iii) “ethical investing”, (iv) shareholder activism. How, and how effectively, do they respond to the barriers to legal measures such as state regulation and civil litigation (lawsuits)? This research should include both academic (scholarly, peer reviewed) sources and other kinds of sources (such as journalistic reports and reports by government agencies, corporations and business groups, civil society NGOs, think-tanks, etc.). The selection of sources should display a coherent focus and, preferably, a range of perspectives. They should not be just a random assortment of books, articles etc. that are vaguely or tangentially related to the topic or each other. The paper will be graded on research, argument (reasoning, evidence), organization and writing.
