(this does NOT mean Flash programming) ## Deliverables # Poker Drill - Ranking **Overview** Poker Drill is a low budget educational game that teaches poker skills. There are 169 (significant) starting hands in Texas Hold'em Poker. The game asks the player to rank each of the 169 poker hands. The game keeps score and awards points based on whether or not answers were correct. Basically, this is a Flash Card game. (this does NOT mean Flash programming) **Platform** This is to run in an iframe from a web browser using Javascript. Accumulated points will be sent to the central server using AJAX calls. All 52 card images must be preloaded or cached in some fashion. Once the game loads, there will be no further internet traffic other than the AJAX call to update the scores on the central server. **Primary Use Case** 1. The System displays two cards, called a Starting Hand. A text box is displayed with a button. 2. The User types in a number from 1 to 169. 3. The System responds that the answer is correct or not, updates the scores, and displays additional clarifying information about the two card combination. 4. The User presses a button to go to the next Starting Hand. 5. The game returns to the beginning and displays another Starting Hand. **Game Operation.** Initially the game operates using only the top 10 of the 169 possible starting hands. More starting hands (the next 10) are added as the user progresses in levels. Progression to the next level is done by getting all new Starting Hands correct, twice. All Starting Hands for the current and previous levels are displayed as questions on a random basis for each level of play. **Novice versus Expert Mode.** The game has two modes, Novice and Expert. In Novice Mode the Clarifying Information is displayed after each guess. This requires the user press a key to go to the next Starting hand. In Expert Mode the answer submission is the request to go to the next Starting hand. **Scoring** For each question answered, 10 Experience points are awarded. For each correct answer, 10 Chips are awarded. Level advancement is defined elsewhere. **Graphics** The cards from the deck are stored as 52 individual files on the web server. The names are [login to view URL], [login to view URL], [login to view URL], [login to view URL], [login to view URL], [login to view URL], and so forth. **Clarifying Information** The clarifying information that is displayed after the user answers is text that look like the following: "A pair of Aces is also known as Pocket Rockets or Bullets. At a nine player table this hand has a 31% chance of winning, but heads up the odds increase to 86.4%. This is the number one ranked starting hand you can have." **Ranking of Hands** This list of 169 rankings is AA-1, KK-2, ... **ALAX Calls** There is an existing database on an existing server. The game will use AJAX to store the scores on the server, which will preserve the game state. **Existing Game State** For a returning player, his game state has been preserved and stored on the server. You will provide variables that will contain this information. Loading these variables is not your responsibility, this code will be provided. **Definitions** **Scores** ??" Scoring is done by accumulating points of various sorts. These are categorized as Chips, Experience, and Level. **Starting Hand** ??" A starting hand is any combination of two playing cards from a standard deck. While there are 52x51=2,652 possible combinations, only 169 are significant. Each starting hand may be one of three states. Suited, Unsuited, or aired. The actual suit of each card is unimportant to where the Starting Hand ranks from 1 to 169. Within the framework of the 169 Starting hands, the System will randomly select suits. **Standard Deck** - This is what is used to play Texas Hold'em Poker. Fifty-two cards of four suits. **Standard Notation** ??" Examples include AA for a pair of Aces, KJo for King Jack offsuit, T3s for Ten Three suited. The higher card is always listed first. Ace is the highest card.
