Press Die Calculator I have a 4 metre long sheet-metal press brake which utilizes segmented dies. These segmented dies are at varying sizes (770mm, 700mm, 570mm, 400mm, 300mm, 250mm, 200mm, 170mm, 150mm, 120mm, 100mm, 90mm, 85mm, 75mm). What I need is a simple program that can quickly calculate the set of dies I need to use in order to carry out a custom job. I need to find out the closest die possible using the dies available (mentioned above) Example - A custom job requires a die length of 2564mm, the die CANNOT be any LARGER than this size, although it can be smaller the closest fitting die is most preferable. So a user would input 2564 into the program and it would then print a list of the closest fitting die combination (770, 700, 570, 400, 120).

Hello I am Masters student in Embedded systems and a advanced C programmer. I can help you with this optimization problem. I have a clarification about the data size. If the data size is as small as what you have give we can use Brute force and can do this in a very trivial manner. But if the data size is big ( that is if the varying segment sizes are large) we could need an algorithm to optimize it. There are standard algorithms available to do this. So let me know by PM and we can discuss this. EDIT : This is a knapsack optimization problem and there are several standard algorithms to solve this. Depending on the accuracy an appropriate algorithm can be chosen So let me know if you would like to work with me.
