My approach to this would be to override the joomla authentication plugin and add a routine that logs the user into vBulletin. This in itself is very easy. The complication with bridges is user synchronisation. Do you need user registering with your Joomla site to be registered with vBulletin? What about password changes- do this need to be replicated in the vBulletin database? Does the bridge work both way- can a user log into vBulletin and be signed in to Joomla? In my experience when a single sign on solution is needed, it's better to use an oAuth type solution like google or facebook or active directory, because these are independent of your services, are maintained by companies with deep pockets, and don't require user synchronisation. I've been writing php code for a very long time, but I have one advantage none of the other people here are going to have. If you have a copy of vBulletin, go to the admincp home page, and you'll see my name. Until January 2020 I was one of the vBulletin developers. What you suggest is a lot trickier than it looks. You can add a module to Joomla to login to vBulletin, if you understand vBulletin well enough. But the first time one of the users changes a password in either vB or Joomla, the passwords will be out of sync. You can tweak the core code in Joomla to maintain the password, but that will be overwritten on the next upgrade. There is a clever way to make vBulletin use the Joomla token.
