High number of processes/threads don't necessarily mean a compromised host, this is how many my homemachine (Slackware64 14.1) is running: $ ps -eLf | wc -l 586 However it could be one of your daemons is misconfigured and doesn't have a process limit or reaps processes fast enough for handling client requests. Slow, malicious or impatient clients could make your system DoS itself this way. A proper configuration should set minimum and maximum limits, as well as an agreeable "timeout" value to keep the service running smoothly. Greetings, Kevin
