I have a lot of experience with iptables, and firewalls in general. I have written some fantastic scripts, from masquerading (nat) to cisco-like reflexive access lists (ie, traffic outbound can only return if it's established or related). I have even done extensive work with ipv6, with ip6tables. I've been running ipv6 since 2005. I've been a huge fan of iptables since its inception, and ipchains before that. The kernel is going in the direction of nftables, one ruleset for everything, replacing ip6tables and ebtables as well. Good luck with your project, and I hope you find the help you're looking for!
