I am writing an eBook showing Windows XP and Windows Vista users how they can manually tune up their PC's without spending fortunes on new software and hardware (which is often detrimental).
Targeting the layman, my book will teach the reader why their computer is slow and how they can improve each element using a step-by-step guide including screenshots. The user must be kept interested in every step along the way and should (to an extent) enjoy reading and implementing this guide.
## Deliverables
Other than the writing itself, I want to
**SHOW** my readers how to do it. (Remember, we are targeting the layman) Therefore the text should be free of jargon (or have jargon explained where necessary) full of flowcharts and tables and graphs and each step should be accompanied by a screenshot.
Whilst I have a general layout of the subjects that I feel need covering in this book, any further suggestions which you may have should be outlined in your bid and bids containing? good suggestions will be favoured.
Here are the chapters which I wish to cover:
* Contents and introduction (outline the problems that slow computers can cause, the solution and the benefits that the book will bring to the reader)
* An outline of the book (explaining the format in which the book will be presented)
* An outline of the Windows operating system
* **Chapters covering the solutions raised below**
* An "ongoing maintenance chart" which might be in the shape of a calendar, detailing which maintenance tasks should be completed and how often.
**The solutions mentioned earlier should be presented in the following format:**
?
* Explain to the reader (remember in laymans terms) why the specific subject has caused their computer to slow down.
* Outline what we are going to do to fix it
* Take them through (step by step) how to do it, warning them along the way of potential pitfalls and adding hints of thngs that they may or may not wish to do.
* Summarise the chapter and introduce the next one.
**The solutions themselves:
Startup speed:** Teach the? reader how to hibernate their computer and also how to manage the way that windows starts up therefore reducing the amount of time it takes for their computer to boot.
**Deleting Unwanted Programs:** Urge the reader to get rid of programs which they do not use, show them how to do this using the add/remove programs tool but specify which programs should be left there which they may not use on a day to day basis.
**Clean the windows registry:** Show the user how they can do this either manually or automatically using software available on the internet.
**Regular virus, adware and spyware scans:** Explain the importance of scanning for viruses and updating the virus scanner itself. I appreciate that screenshots will not really be possible here because there are so many.
**Internet Explorer:** How to optimize the web browser by allocating the right amount of memory for the cache, regulating the amount of addons the browser has and reguarly removing browsing history.
**Moving large chunks of files into external storage (like music):** Show the reader how to do this and the importance of keeping an amount of free memory on the hard drive.
**Vista Only:** Increase the memory using external storage. (This will be a relatively short chapter)
**Disk Defragmentation:** show the reader how to schedule defrags so that it doesnt interrupt them.
**Ensuring Windows and drivers are? updated:** self explanatory
***Please feel free to add any suggestions to this contents list bids including good suggestions will be favoured!
***I would also like to urge the winning writer (or those bidding) to detail any fun features they would include in the book. This might be in the way of funny cartoons? with captions or animated? title pages.? You might want to display a progress bar across the top of each page so that as the book is read, the progress bar increases, again, I am open to suggestions included in? bids.
I estimate that including images graphs etc, the book should be around 100 pages in length.
***Potential For More Work
***Please note that the winning writer will be OFFERED the following work on completion, providing their work is of a high standard. The following work is NOT required within this bid.
A sales page for the book, along with graphic and web? design.
An MP3 (spoken)? copy of the book
Graphic design for the book itself
Involvement in future projects to include "a guide to windows 7" and a short book "choosing the right pc"
**We are constantly embarking on new projects and you have the potential to access alot of work if this project is done in a timely manner and to a high standard.**
