Assignment 4: Research and Argument This final paper will be on a topic of your choosing, and it will be one that involves research. As with all of our writing, I want to see how we might build on what we have already written, though by this time people have been writing very different kinds of things. What themes or ideas or topics have you already developed that you could build on? What arguments have been prompted by something you have read or watched, something you have written (a place, a person, and event); something you included in your website as you designed it, or something we have done in class? For Tuesday, November 4th, I want us to talk about our topics in class, and so for then, I would like everyone to do the following: List 5 items for each of the following categories: ● 5 items from one of your paper that would benefit from further research ● 5 people who are important to you intellectually (writers, artists, philosophers, musicians, public figures etc.) ● 5 historical events that correlate to one of your papers ● 5 of the readings that we have done this semester that have left an impression on you. ● 5 sources about a topic from one of your papers (nationality, illness, race, gender etc.) For TWO of the categories, provide a sentence or two about each of the items you chose. This is meant to be more than just a speculative list. If you choose to list 5 events that correlate to one of your papers, for example, that might entail some preliminary research. If you choose 5 people important to you intellectually, that would involve a brief statement as to who they are and why they are important to you. If you choose a topic from one of our papers (say, “race”) find 5 sources that discuss race in a way that you find interesting. You may not have a chance to have absorbed all of the material you find, but start making those connections. Consider this an annotated list that might very well wind up being part of an annotated bibliography, so the more detailed information you have the better, and the more specific the source you have, the better. Keep records of where you get information from. We are beginning to plot a paper based this time not on what we know, but what we would like to know more about. What we are doing is plotting a paper: identifying different elements that may or may not be connected but that stand out for various reasons and seeing how we might weave them into a paper; defining a critical vocabulary for ourselves.
