Website Viral Campaign

Technical details:

This project was built in HTML on top of the Zend Framework with Facebook & Twitter integration, timed page releases and a JavaScript controlled virtual queue. The queue was also replicated in real life on a 150m long LED screen which was erected in Aotea Square. The queue took live facebook comments and tweets and placed them in speech bubbles next to the users selected avatar and profile picture both on the website

Challenges

The main challenge was how to maximize social influence and reduce point loading. Each day for 12 days we released new pieces of sharable content. Each time that content was liked, re-shared, commented or re-tweeted by a unique user, the person would receive points and be moved up the queue. The queue itself was a pretty complex piece of work with over 10,000 people projected to join the queue and it having to dynamically update.

Solutions

Each time the user shared a piece of content, we recorded the post’s ID against their user. Each time the user logged in to the site, we would look up their posts and calculate their social influence by various means. Their points were then stored against the user and determined their position in the queue. This was done on login rather than as a scheduled task to reduce point loading on the server. The queue it self was coded largely in JavaScript. The queue would only load avatars of people in your actual view to reduce load. Each time the user scrolled, the visible section of the queue would be calculated and loaded in.
