A Sequential Approach for the Mitigation of Scale Deposition

This is my dissertation on a practical methodology implemented by a Petroleum Engineer for the sequential determination of quantity, quality and location of organic and inorganic scales deposited inside the completion assembly and on perforations. This process comprises of learning the type or nature of the scales which are basically solid deposits, the reasons for the formation of such deposits and the extent of the problem introduced by these mineral deposits. We find out that the majority of the mineral scales constitutes: barium sulfate, calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, Anhydrite, halite etc. The practical methodology consists of tracking the formation of mineral scales on the completion assembly. The initial indication is a rapid and continuous decline of production; a more rigorous approach consists of performing a PBU on the well and analyzing the data through a pressure transient analysis software.
