To eliminate the frustration of finding both a USB to Serial and DB9 to RJ-45 cables every time I needed to access a network device via it's local management port, the majority of which are RJ-45 receptacles, I developed a cable where all of the required electronics to convert from USB to Serial (RS-232) were embedded in a molded USB connector and the other end was terminated with an RJ-45 connector. For more rugged environments a variant was built with an IP-67 compliment USB hood and terminated to an ODVA compliment connector.
