Profile of David John Hartley of ElanElan Ltd: Skills ------ David: * Has both IT technical and management, accounting, financial, business (offshore in recent years) skills and experience, unusual in one person. * Is capable in many IT areas at all levels from analysis and design to project management and implementation through to the detailed grunt work of actually making it happen. * Is creative in getting the most out of systems, including making existing systems work better. * Is detailed, meticulous, and organised person who produces high quality, efficient, tested, documented work. * Relates well to end user needs (listens!) and produces solutions which work and meet the requirements. * Is responsive to feedback and is good at making incremental improvements to perfect things. * Writes decent English. (British/Australian English normally, but can switch to US English.) * Communicates well. Technologies ------------ A partial list of the many technologies David has worked with over the years, in both the office and web (server and client) areas, is: * The LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) environment, the most widely used web development environment * WordPress, plus WordPress themes (Thesis) and plugins (WishListMember) * MySQL (or Databases and SQL generally) * PHP (4 or 5) * C, C++, Delphi, Fortran * ColdFusion and the Windows server environment * HTML/XHTML and CSS * JavaScript * JavaScript foundation libraries notably jQuery and MooTools * Ajax either natively or via jQuery/MooTools Experience ---------- David's experience in computing, business (4 companies in 4 countries), life (lived in 8 countries), and love (4 wives) is wide and deep. There have been both big successes and big failures in business and in love, though not the computing which has always worked! The failures are part of the learning process that has led to greater wisdom today - hopefully! His serious computing started in Namibia in 1969 with the mathematical modelling of a large river basin using 100 years of rainfall data. To get the job done on the computer available, an ICT 1500, he revamped the Fortran compiler. Back in Australia, David started Hartley Computer in 1974, and targeted the Accounting Profession, as Accountants needed computing but were not into doing it themselves as engineers then tended to be. David and colleagues developed the Hartley Professional Accountants' System - HAPAS - and associated systems, both hardware and software, while building one of the first mini computer vertical market successes in the world, with ultimately 250 staff and 3,000 sites in 7 countries. In the process David became "the father of computer client accounting", and won several awards. The Hartley Computer success was killed by hubris and a messy divorce. Big lesson in business and life! Then there was Banksia Information Technology (BIT) in Hong Kong which designed and manufactured IT gear (PCs, modems, and a voice activated fax/phone switch we called PHAXswitch), and more design awards... And so to the UK in 1993 via New Zealand, with HAPAS Mark II, named [login to view URL]. By 1998, he and partners in Hartley Computer UK had gained 1,000 Accounting Practice Clients ranging from one man practices to PricewaterhouseCoopers. Then, in 1999, David’s new wife Caramia was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. David and partners sold the UK business to Sage PLC, so Caramia and David could move to a warmer climate in Antigua, which Caramia thought would help her, as it has done. In Antigua, David has pursued various consulting and online business interests. These have included an online lottery project, an online business improvement tool, and working with an online educational marketing company based in Panama. Latterly Caramia and David have brought up a family of websites (Naked Multiple Sclerosis, Cure Multiple Sclerosis, and Naked MS Relationships) to make Caramia's knowledge of MS available to help others. The site content is by Caramia. David did all the development work, including implementing detailed tracking via the DB, to give more specific information than is provided by Google Analytics or Awstats from web log analysis.
