Rhetorical Analysis of Visual Text

Overview Writers, speakers, artists, and advertisers all make choices about tone, structure, imagery, language, and many other elements to shape their audience’s reaction. Rhetorical analysis helps us understand those choices and their impact so that we can be more thoughtful consumers and creators of messages. Assignment In this assignment, we will consider the rhetorical strategies discussed in this unit to analyze a visual text. You will write a rhetorical analysis essay that explores the composition of either a print advertisement or a political cartoon (see attached list) and how it communicates a particular message to the audience through rhetorical appeals. When analyzing your visual text, you should consider a variety of rhetorical strategies, such as: Color – the use of color can evoke certain emotions or convey a hidden meaning; Layout – the arrangement of elements on the page can guide a viewer’s eye to emphasize key ideas. Symbolism – visual symbols sometimes carry a specific cultural meaning that can represent a deeper meaning (such as a bald eagle to represent American ideals). Body language – people within the visual text can convey emotions or messages through facial expressions or stance. Setting – the place illustrated within the visual text may influence the interpretation of the piece or convey additional context. Juxtaposition – the placement of contrasting elements side by side to highlight their differences, to create irony, or to make a critique. Context – the cultural or historical circumstances that inform the images or ideas being presented. NOTE: You do not have to analyze all of the strategies. Choose the ones that are MOST relevant to your advertisement. Use the outline from Module 2 to help you compose your essay. Assignment Guidelines Write a 500 – 700-word essay explaining how the specific rhetorical strategies within the visual text you selected either persuade, inform, or provoke thought in the audience and what particular message this text was meant to portray. Choose at least two rhetorical strategies to analyze. Your work should be presented in MLA format and must follow the basic structure of an academic essay: Introduction – In the first paragraph, you should include a hook that makes an engaging statement about visual media and its influence. You should also provide context where you briefly introduce the visual text you chose with relevant source information, and a thesis statement that states the main points of your analysis and argues how the rhetorical strategies used contribute to its effectiveness in persuading, informing, or provoking thought. Be sure to clearly state which rhetorical strategies you chose to examine and what specific message you think is being portrayed. Body Paragraphs – Your body paragraphs should each focus on a specific rhetorical strategy used in the visual text and analyze how it contributes to the overall effectiveness of the message. You must start with a clear topic sentence that states a claim about the visual text. Then, you should provide specific examples that include details from the text to illustrate your points. Your analysis should make connections from the visual elements to the creator’s intended purpose. You should conclude each body paragraph by discussing how the particular rhetorical technique helps to either persuade, inform, or provoke thought. Conclusion – Your conclusion paragraph should summarize your main argument and reflect on the broader significance of the visual text, considering its impact on the intended audience. This paragraph might also contain a call to action or a thought-provoking emphasis on future implications. Your essay must be submitted as a PDF or Word document.
