I need some troubleshooting help on a Wrodpress site. When I edited the right sidebar widget and saved it, the right sidebar widget completely went away/disappeared, replaced with “Archives”. That shouldn’t be there, and there is actually NO widget on the site for the Archives. Previously, the html code (copied below) was there on the right sidebar instead of what appears there. I have attempted several times to re-add the right sidebar widget with html code (below) and sometimes it says “Widget saved” and other times I get this error when trying to save it: "wordpress error "there was an error. The response is not a valid jSON reponse”. I suspect that this may be a server error/issue? Even when it DOES say it’s saved, the widget then disappears and there’s no right sidebar saved. Here’s the code: (I removed the domain name for privacy reasons, but you'll get an idea of what it was.) <ul class="sidebarlogo"><li><a href="[login to view URL]"><img src="[login to view URL]" alt="alt-tag"></a></li> <li><a href="https:// [login to view URL]"><img src="https:// [login to view URL]" alt="alt-tag"></a></li> <li><a href="https:// [login to view URL]"><img src="https:// [login to view URL]" alt="alt-tag"></a></li> <li><a href="https:// [login to view URL]"><img src="https:// [login to view URL]" alt="alt-tag"></a></li> <li><a href="https:// [login to view URL]"><img src="https:// [login to view URL]" alt="alt-tag"></a></li> <li><a href="https:// [login to view URL]"><img src="https:// [login to view URL]" alt="alt-5"></a></li> <li><a href="https:// [login to view URL]"><img src="https:// [login to view URL]" alt="alt-8"></a></li> </ul> The right sidebar widget won't update at all. A Godaddy guy said this, not sure if it'll help you. "I do see lines of code of wordfence code in the .htaccess code. JSON error you receiving is more a firewall/waf blocking. I tried to add the widgets path to Sucuri so would recommend likely making a ticket with them before the WP team has it’s not the server likely blocking the request. I do check that your RestAPI is accessible but could be a Sucuri believing it is a site injection attack for the widget saving the HTML. Another path would investigate changing to classic widgets instead which can bypass firewall rules. I believe it’s firewall first but could also look into elementor and your generator theme as well. "

Hi, I can tell you’re dealing with a frustrating and puzzling issue where your WordPress sidebar widget won’t save correctly and the unwanted 'Archives' widget appears instead. This definitely points to deeper conflicts, like firewall interference or REST API restrictions, as your GoDaddy team hinted. With my extensive experience in WordPress troubleshooting, PHP, and server configurations, I’ll dive into your firewall (Sucuri, Wordfence) rules and widget system to identify why the JSON save fails. I’ll also explore options like switching to classic widgets or modifying the theme’s sidebar logic to restore stable widget functionality. Rest assured, I understand how disrupting this is for your site’s user experience and will resolve it effectively. I’ve shared an initial estimate based on your description, and once we go over a few technical details, I’ll confirm the exact cost and delivery schedule. Looking forward to your reply so we can finalize the exact plan. Have you already tried temporarily disabling the Sucuri or Wordfence firewall to see if the widget saves correctly without them? Thanks, Asad

Let me troubleshoot why your right sidebar widget will not update. I'll investigate why you're not getting a JSON response when you update the right sidebar widget, which prevented the update. I've read the response from the GoDaddy guy and reckon that access to your server logs, typically via CPanel, will help just a tad bit as well. Let me know if you'd like me to help.

Hi there, I’ve resolved similar WordPress issues where custom HTML widgets were not saving correctly. In your case, it seems like a combination of server-side and plugin conflicts is causing the problem. I can investigate the server logs to identify any underlying issues. I recommend switching to a classic HTML widget instead of a custom HTML widget, as this often bypasses such conflicts. We can also explore using a dedicated plugin for custom code that’s less likely to be affected by other plugins. Let’s schedule a 10-minute introductory call so I can learn more about your project and we can discuss the best approach. I’m available at any time that works for you. I’m eager to help you resolve this issue quickly. Best, Adil

Greetings, It sounds like you're experiencing some frustrating issues with your WordPress sidebar widget. From what you've described, it seems that after saving your changes, the widget disappears and is replaced with “Archives,” which shouldn’t be there. The JSON error message you're seeing could indeed indicate a conflict with your server’s settings, possibly due to security measures in place like firewalls. To tackle this, I would first check the server settings and investigate any firewall rules that might be blocking the widget updates. I can also explore switching to classic widgets, as suggested, which might help bypass those restrictions. Additionally, I’d verify your theme and plugin compatibility to ensure everything is functioning smoothly. With my background in WordPress development, I’m confident I can resolve this issue for you. Best regards, Saba Ehsan
