My process per batch: 1) Read each page carefully, including cursive, and transcribe it faithfully: original wording and spelling, with no 'improvements'. 2) Proofread each transcription against the scan a second time. 3) Any word I can't read with confidence is marked consistently, e.g. [illegible] or [word?], and listed in a short batch note, so nothing is silently guessed. 4) Files are checked for stray characters, smart-quote or encoding issues and trailing layout codes before delivery.
