Initial expectations are a 32-bit type, such as Motorola 68xxx, ARM...
The MCU will implement the well known PID control algorithm.
Feedback and feed forwards will be implemented.
Multiple instances of this loop will be created.
Each control loop will need to be evaluated at a 1-2khz rate.
There should be enough processing capacity to allow future expansion of additional control loops.

PID loop is a position type control loop.
Feed-backs provide position.
Feed-forwards are provided as velocity and acceleration.
I also have an NXP LPC2148 (ARM7TDMI) development board if you consider an LPC2148 workable for this project.

Hi, I can do it using Atmel ARM7, but I have to know more about the IC and what needs to be controlled. For receiving commands I think FT232 is a good choice if there is no need data transfer more than 10 KB/s.
