I'm looking for a comprehensive visual discourse analysis of a geopolitical video. The analysis should focus on multiple aspects, including: - Body language and gestures - Visual symbols and imagery - Scene composition and framing - The dynamics of speech: who speaks, who is silenced - The role of the presenter - The distinction between watching versus reading - Avoid summarizing the debate or discussing the politics What I Should Be Looking For While Watching When I watch the film, I should not only listen to what people say. I should ask: 1. What kind of story is being told about oil? Is oil framed as: • a strategic geopolitical asset? • an economic opportunity? • a site of conflict? • a national resource? • an environmental issue? What does oil mean in this programme? ⸻ 2. Who is allowed to speak? Notice: • All guests are policy experts. • There are no Venezuelan citizens. • No oil workers. • No Indigenous communities. • No environmental activists. What does this tell me about who counts as a legitimate voice? Does the programme treat extractive politics as an elite conversation? ⸻ 3. What do I see — and what don’t I see? Are there: • Oil fields? • Pollution? • Landscapes? • Protests? • Everyday Venezuelan life? Or is the visual focus on: • Studio debate • Split screens • Graphics • Maps What kind of extraction becomes visible? What kind disappears? Absence is meaningful. ⸻ 4. How does the studio format shape meaning? Inside Story has: • A moderator controlling the debate. • A neutral, global news aesthetic. • Clean visuals. • Equal speaking time. Does this make conflict appear rational and manageable? Does it make US intervention seem like a policy discussion rather than a violent geopolitical act? ⸻ 5. How is “control” framed? The central question is about control. Control over: • oil production? • profits? • sovereignty? Does the programme treat US control as inevitable? Negotiable? Legitimate? Language like: • reform • investment • stability • private sector opening These words carry political assumptions. ⸻ 6. What did watching this do to my understanding? This is crucial. When I read academic texts (Escobar, Li, Andreucci): • Extraction appears historical. • Colonial. • Environmental. • Social. • Tied to land and citizenship. • Connected to social movements. When I watch the news: • Extraction becomes geopolitics. • It becomes about US–Venezuela relations. • It becomes about markets. • It feels immediate and strategic. The news format compresses extractivism into elite politics. Academic reading expands it into lived, contested, social processes. That contrast is the intellectual heart of the assignment. Please share your analysis of the video once watched the main objective of this assignment is to: “critically reflect on what watching a news item means for your understanding of Latin American extractive politics, over reading academic articles” We are asked to use Gillian Roses Visual discourse analysis. Prompts we were given: How are resource extraction, natures, people, places and expertise represented in the documentary? Do include what people say but also consider how they are positioned and treated in the film. • There is no right or wrong here – you can focus on certain themes or particular things you see in the programme. Every viewer may notice different things. This is for my course in: political ecology focusing on extractive environments. The youtube video is: [login to view URL] have-over-venezuelas-oil Also found under: Al Jazeera’s Inside Story “How much control will the US have over Venezuela’s oil?” it should be around 30 min long.
