A researcher is interested in whether students from NYU text more or less often than the national average. The national average number of texts per day in 2012 was 43. A random sample of 35 NYU students was selected and the number of texts per day determined. The following data are the number of texts per day for the NYU students:

What are the results of the statistical test? Write them up in APA format.

Using the mean and standard deviation from SPSS, construct a 95% confidence interval, by hand, for the population mean number of texts by NYU students.

Explain how you determine significance using the confidence interval.

Over many years of testing, I have considered the population mean of the first quiz (quiz1) for my statistics class to be μ = 82. Suppose I was curious whether my students from 2016 were significantly different than all of my other students over several years. I took a sample of data from those students and posted the data on NYU Classes (Resources>SPSS Assignments > SPSS Assignment Data > Assignment Undergrad Data B. Using this data, test this hypothesis. Answer the following questions:

Using the mean and standard deviation from SPSS, construct a 99% confidence interval, by hand, for the population mean Quiz 1 score for the sample semester’s data.

Using the confidence interval, do we find significance? Even if the results are the same, explain why our results with the confidence interval might differ from those of the t-test (Hint: think about alpha).

Note: Although technically you could do a z-test because you have a large sample, you must do a t-test because that is the only test SPSS provides. Use t for the confidence interval as well.

The population mean final exam (finalex) for all of my statistics classes is 83. Test the hypothesis that your sample data from one year (2016) (using Assignment Undergrad Data B) are significantly different from the population. Answer the same questions (a-j) as in question 2, but for Final Exam.
