Format for Research Assignment
I. This research assignment is 15 -20 (ten-twenty) typed pages, not counting the title page and bibliography.
II. Use 8 ½ by 11 white paper and a 10 or 12 point font avoid fancy typefaces such as script; double space throughout the paper.
III. Use MLA format for citing and documentation. Research is documented with in-text citations and a Works Cited page.
IV. The title page includes the title of your paper which is centered in the middle of your first page. List your name, the date, course and section number, Texas Southern University and instructor’s name in the lower right corner of this page.
V. Use a header (top right) for page numbers.
VI. Insert a page break before the first letter of the Works Cited, to keep that page last.
VII. Italicize the titles of films, plays, novels, magazines, newspapers, books, art works.
VIII. Use quotation marks for the titles of short works, such as essays, poems, articles.
IX. In a long research paper (20 pages or more), place a thesis and a balanced and uncluttered outline before the text of the paper. Number the outline pages like any preface with lowercase Roman numerals i, ii, iii, and so on.
X. Do not pontificate in your essay; that is, do not announce your intention, goals, or objectives.
XI. Use present tense to describe the plot of fictional events; use the past tense for events in history.
XII. Quotations from the King James Version of the Bible are cited in the text (Gen.4.6-11) and need not be included in the Works Cited.
XIII. The Bibliography or Works Cited page includes only the names of the sources referenced in your essay.
XIV. Research papers are due May 4, 2016; please submit electronically on Blackboard and turn in a hard copy by 8:00 p.m. on the due date; no extensions, please. All topics must be approved by instructor.
Possible Topics: You may explore thematic concerns, literary techniques and trends, literary movements, character study, stylistic concerns, gender portraits, differences, and/or conflicts; technical devices, literary authority and critical theories etc. Use at least three (3) appropriate/representative novels as literary contexts (primary sources) for your essay.
