The vasoactivity of blood vessels is impaired in patients with diabetes, hypertension and heart failure. For example, hypertension is associated with changes in vasomotor tone and typically attenuates vasodilation. The regulation of the vasomotor tone in medium size arteries is of interest because of the clinical relevance to vasospasm and atherosclerosis. The current project is to simultaneously measure dynamic pressure and dimensional changes during vasoconstriction or vasodilation using isovolumic myography. The tension-velocity relation and characteristic curves for contraction of blood vessels by applying Zhong-Ghista 3-element model will be developed. These findings for blood vessels will advance our knowledge of endothelium and vascular smooth muscle mechanics and pharmacodynamics.
