Laura Shapiro, Something from the Oven, Reinventing Dinner in 1950s America (Viking Penguin, 2004)

Thomas E. Ricks, Fiasco, The American Military Adventure in Iraq (Penguin 2006)

Todd Gitlin, The Sixties, Years of Hope, Days of Rage (Bantam, 1987)

Thomas Borstelmann, The Cold War and the Color Line, American Race Relations in the Global Arena (Harvard UP 2001)

Matthew Dallek, The Right Moment, Ronald Reagan’s First Victory and the Decisive Turning Point in American Politics (Oxford UP 2000)

Mary Dudziak, Cold War Civil Rights, Race and the Image of American Democracy (Princeton UP 2000)

James Mann, Rise of the Vulcans, The History of Bush’s War Cabinet (Penguin 2004)

Andrew Krepinevich, Jr., The Army and Vietnam (Johns Hopkins UP 1986)

You will write a four to five page analytical review of an academic history on an event or trend related to the course. You may choose a book of interest to you, but it must meet specifications that will be discussed in class and posted on eCompanion. Your review will address the same or similar analytic questions that you apply to the weekly documents. It is due on June 9, the last day of class and must be in on time to earn full credit. For every day that a review is late, it loses one grade increment (from A+ to A to A-, for example, if two days late). No review will be accepted after the day of the final exam, by which time it will be seven days late.

TO EXPLAIN MORE FULLY: The purpose of a book review is to provide someone other than yourself (your readers) enough information about the book that they understand its scope, strengths and weaknesses, and its contribution to an understanding of its broad topic.

Hundreds of books have been written on the topic you have chosen so you want to approach the book you are reviewing as one person’s contribution to a larger project of understanding an event, trend, person, etc. It’s a unique product, written by a specific individual seeking to answer one or more related questions about some aspect of the topic. The author has had to conceptualize how to answer the question(s), what sources to use, how to organize the information that makes up the body of the book, and then present it in an understandable way to their readers.

Your goal in writing a review is to figure out these aspects of the book: it is an analysis, not just a summary, of the book’s content.

Modern authors typically explain their research focus and how they have organized the information by chapter and/or chronologically and/or thematically in the book’s Introduction. So read the introduction closely. It should also include the scope of the book: the time period that the author is focused on and the aspects of the event/trend, etc.

Use the Table of Contents to understand the book’s organization. Use the Bibliography or other material at the back of the book to see what sources the author used. They are likely of multiple kinds, such as government records, interviews, and/or primary sources such as personal papers, newspapers, and magazines. Are there any surprises in what sources were used? Can you think of sources that might have been good to use?

Books usually include information on the author: academic degrees or jobs, previous publications, etc. You may also want to look online for additional information.

Look also at the publication information at the beginning of the book: which press published it? University presses only publish books that have been evaluated as serious research by people in the discipline. There are also serious publishers who aren’t academic; see what you can find out.

Pay attention to the publication date so you can contextualize the book. You’ve learned the history of this time period so use your knowledge to place the book in its time period. Consider what immediate events or concerns might have been on the author’s mind as (s)he was working on the book and how these might have influenced the question they asked or the sources they used.

After gathering this information, you will be ready to write your review. You can organize it as you do the weekly notes, although you will need to begin with an introductory paragraph. Then,
· Focus on the author and purpose (scope and research focus);
· Summarize the structure and key points;
· Analyze how the author’s identity and the context influenced the content; you can discuss the bibliographic sources here;
· Conclude with an overall assessment of what the book offers someone interested in learning more about this topic. In other words, what does it contribute?
