I need help getting started with my project. I would like to get code which will connect to a telnet server and listen for certain strings.
I would like to create an array of strings to watch for. When these strings come in on the telnet session I would like to run a function (Like write a flag to a database for example)
I would also like to use wildcards in the strings. For example:
"HE*O" would trigger on "HELLO"
"HE??O" would trigger on "HELLO"
"HE?O" would NOT trigger on "HELLO"
I'm not sure if you will need to do regular expressions for this or not. I've researched somethign called 'expect' in php and python which might work. I also had teh idea of using a FIFO buffer and constantly looping through my array to see if it matches the telnet buffer. I am looking for someone to write the low level base of this code then I will take it and continue on with the functinality after strings are being matched and dummy functions are being triggered.
This will run 24/7 in a PHP CLI instance. The real world application for this is to listen to a telnet enabled lighting server, when the server gives the code for Light #2 on I will flag it in the database, etc, for every light.
I found this, but I'm not sure if it's what we need:

I have worked on similar projects connecting to remote servers using sockets and listening for replys. Send me a pm and we can get started on this immediately. Thanks
