ADDITIONAL CHANGE SINCE ORIGINAL POST!!!
Issue 1 - Gallery now MUST BE dynamic based on XML file, and accesssing images on the server.
Issue 2 - Each gallery item needs to be able to link to additional gallery items that don't appear in the top navigation. I.E. The top navigation opens image A with Description A within the image/description display area there need to be sub navigation links to go to A-2, A-3 etc. If no sub images exist no subnavigation is displayed. The end result is that the gallery is two layers deep.
The idea is that the primary navigation of the gallery/portfolio will be done with the little orange squares. Each square will navigate to an image/description.
In computer science terms, the primary navigation will point toward a node in an XML file, however now I want each node to actually be the head of a linked list, so that the sub navigation can navigate through the linked list forward or backward.
I hope this helps.
