Hi,
The scope of this project is to setup a connection between the Twilio SMS API and our MS Azure backend to receive "opt-in" messages for SMS Campaigns, as well as the ability to "opt-out". We have a Visual Studio solution in source control that already has the Azure Web Roles setup, and we will provide credentials to login to the source control system. We also already have the phone number to use with Twilio.
Twilio is a Cloud Communications provider that makes it simple to send out SMS through it's integration with Azure. They have helper libraries for C#.
The procedure for opting-in will consist of texting a specific keyword to a telephone number that we have acquired.
Twilio will send a message to a SMS Request URL hosted on Azure with parameters for the opt-in. The service on Azure will take the parameters and use them to create an entry for the opt-in. If the user is new, then an entry will be made into a SQL Azure table that I have setup for the opt-ins. If the user is already in the DB then they won't be added again to the DB, and we will send them a text through Twilio indicating that they have already signed up. If the user is new then send them an SMS through Twilio confirming that they have been added, and instructions for opting-out.
The opt-out process starts when the end-user texts "STOP" to the phone number. This will cause Twilio to send a message to Azure which will be parsed and set a flag on the opted-in user record to mark that they have opted out.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Cheers,
Jeff
