Projection description : We want to setup a cluster of fully redundant and scalable VPN routers using Vyatta virtual machines (virtualbox) running on several identical EC2 instances with auto-scaling through AWS's CloudWatch. Authentication will be done by Freeradius hosted on a dedicated EC2 instance accessing data on AWS's RDS. Deliverable are : 1/ working Router EC2 instance, based on standard Ubuntu 10.04 LTS AMI, with EBS as root/bootable file system. Inside this EC2 instance, install of VirtualBox with autostart of Vyatta V6 virtual machine (using standard vmdk file published by Vyatta). Install of a local FreeRadius proxy server. 2/ working FreeRadius EC2 instance, based on standard Ubuntu 10.04 LTS AMI, with EBS as root/bootable file sytem. Inside this EC2 instance, install of Freeradius server using RDS as "remote" MySQL server. 3/Setup of the Vyatta virtualbox instance (running on the Router EC2 instance) : Creation of a working multi-session VPN server with authentification through FreeRadius and using VRRP for enhanced reliability. 4/ Setup AWS Cloudwatch to monitor and manage scalability and failover scenarios for the Router and Freeradius EC2 instances.
