A non-technical usage specification is given here – real examples of similar systems may be found on the web. The idea is to build a web-based system (multi-language) for monitoring people's progression through a particular set of objectives that they have defined (not necessarily a project). They will set out their objectives and goals for what they wish to do over a period of time. Their progress will then be able to be reviewed and updated by themselves and looked at by their boss whenever they feel inclined. They should be able to ask for help and check their progress. At the beginning and end of their defined objectives there should be a review questionnaire. This is the basis but we would like to add some more style to it by including some appraisal tools, email reminders, etc.
For this we need to set up (1) a web front end, (2) a database (3) some other software components in the future. Part (3) will form a different project unless there are some definite ideas. All information must be passed via the database – and the web front end and all software components will access this independently. This seems to be a type of forum/communications centre/elearning centre and will be similar to the Friday5s software that is currently available (a web demonstration can easily be located).
Input-Output and facilities linked with database include: personal details, goals/objectives, timing, review information, guidance, tips, reporting tools, web-based questionnaires, tools for reading/updating/deleting, leader review to have overall control of all information. There are probably more items that have not been thought of yet, but the database will need to handle lots of text and review results. It would be great to set up the review questionnaires via the database so that the moderator can create these via a simple interface (web-based?). There will also be other software components that will need for automatic processing of information, but this will be contracted in a separate project.
It is intended that this system will be hosted on a linux server with SQL and other facilities that are needed. Open Source components that may or may not be used and adapted are: Dicole MimerDesk, MyCon or others that are preferable. There is no limit in the software that may be required to build the system, provided that it is of high standard – the objective is to get an excellent system that is easily scaleable to a high number of users.
More details will be supplied in a detailed specification at a later date. Any potential programmer ideas are welcome.
