This project is to build an asp.net mockup of a new web-based reporting tool. A partially built version of the report currently resides on a windows 2K server, running Apache and Tomcat.
The report functions as follows:
Select a date range and the report shows a new page with an expanding table structure. First it shows a simple table of rows (orders) -> click on a row (order) and it expands (an embedded table) to show the order detail -> click on a detail record and controls appear to accept or reject that record and the database is updated and an email is sent out.
Each of the orders (embedded tables) needs controls that function strictly on the embedded table and not on the entire order set. When these controls are selected the contents of the embedded table (order) are changed. The view of the order set, order, and order detail should remain 'center of page' as the controls are selected/changed.
Our problem is that the page refreshes each time a control is used and brings the user back to the top of the page where he has to scroll back down to the record he was working on -> expand it (click on it) -> and verify the control worked (updated the row detail).
Expect several iterations of improvements as the design is improved. Flexibility and an understanding of what we are trying to accomplish will be key to success. Follow-on projects including production builds are possible if results are satisfactory.
