We operate a number of hotspots, where users have to go through an authentication process before they can get free internet. This involves going through a splash screen and clicking an ‘enter here’ link. The idea is that once a user clicks the ‘enter here’ link they are through to the free internet and then redirected to a url of our choice, again typically this would be the facebook page of whichever brand that is advertising at that time. As the logon process takes place in a browser, then the user is simply directed on to a new page.
On most devices this process is launched in the native or default browser, however in the iPhone a ‘hotspot login overlay’ is launched containing the ‘UIWebView’ widget which terminates as soon as the connection to the internet has been completed. The hotspot logon overlay then simply disappears, and the user does not get redirected as planned but simply brought back to their original location. This is very bad for a brand who want to direct users to their facebook page, and very bad for us by extension.
We need to bring users from this ‘hotspot login overlay’ to a URL in the Safari web browser when they login, and as yet we have not figured out how to do it.
