"The step that causes the most disruption in a school M365 rollout is the mail cutover, not the tenant build. Changing MX before mailboxes are provisioned and tested means staff mail bounces on a working day, and schools feel that immediately. So I sequence the DNS last and verify everything behind it first. How I'd approach it: 1. Tenant setup - domain verified, DNS records staged, licensing assigned, admin roles set to least privilege with separate break-glass accounts. 2. Users and groups - staff and student accounts provisioned in bulk from your existing list, security groups per year/department, MFA enforced on staff. 3. Exchange Online - mailboxes, shared mailboxes, distribution lists, and correct SPF, DKIM and DMARC so school mail doesn't land in parents' spam folders. This is my specialty and it's the part most rollouts get wrong. 4. SharePoint and Teams - site structure per department, permissions, sharing defaults restricted appropriately for a school. 5. Mail cutover last, at a low-traffic time, with rollback ready. 6. Documentation your IT contact can actually follow, plus a short handover session. Two questions: roughly how many staff and student accounts, and are you migrating from an existing mail system or starting fresh? If migrating, what is it now?
