Web Site loading speed improvement

Our virtual tours feature combination of floor plans with large number of still photos. (Sample: [login to view URL] ) The tour is fully functional after all the images are downloaded. The loading speed is usually adequate, but user can get delays (counter stuck or graphic elements are skipped) when connection is getting slower. We made an attempt to improve the user experience, by hiding entire loading process behind a static page, which loads pretty quick. ([login to view URL] ). We also got a side effect, which is a show-stopper: if user clicks a hot spot before all the images are loaded all other hotspots disappear. To see the problem try to hit a hotspot a second after floor plan shows up. We are interested in fixing this problem. Any alternative solutions for improving the user experience with slow connection can be also considered.
