Almost a year ago four ASU students came together to create Symp1e LLC. Our goal was to update the home lawn sprinkler controller to a modern web appliance by using a user's data on the cloud. We call this the WaterAll. The user controls his WaterAll over his favorite hardware, be it PC, Apple, iPhone, iPad or Droid, from anywhere in the world ¿ and no software or app download is required. Setting up the WaterAll is much like setting up an email account. The heart of our WaterAll is a wireless hardware controller for our board that has a built-in TCP/IP controller and WiFi (802.11 b/g/n) protocol which just became available on the market. So we have a proven, seamless hook into the WiFi networks available in most homes and businesses.
As you might imagine, all the powers of web-enabling are brought to bear: the WaterAll is updated regularly as the seasons progress, including updates for local (zipcode-based) weather information data-mined from the web. The user can get his watering history tracked, in gallons or in dollars ¿ feedback that is not provided in water sprinkler controls available today. If the user decides to take up gardening, simple yet reliable information is provided to the user based on agronomists and master gardeners working in his locale. A user wants to know when to plant, what his watering costs will be, what his fertilizer costs will be and how to track the progress of his plants. Lots of people plant tomatoes, but not many know what those tomatoes are costing them. Our motto is "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." It is not good to overwhelm the user with useless generic data. Our idea is for the user to follow a local master gardener who is tending the same plants ¿ sort of a social media for gardeners. We will also provide the user with advertizing targeted for his or her specific plant needs.
We anticipate having the WiFi controller, Version 2, of our WaterAll available for beta site testing in homes just after the first of the year. The first version of our website/cloud server will be based entirely on user-selected timings. As 2013 progresses we will add the weather data-mining, water-consumption feedback features, plant-specific agronomy timings selections, and finally the local master gardener/social media for gardeners experience. We think we are following a consumer trend for more water conservation and more home gardening. We want to empower the user with cost information and useful local gardening information. We don't want to bog the user down with reams of useless information. For example, if a user is planting lima bean seeds, the WaterAll will be given a specific schedule that waters frequently in the first few days to sprout the seeds then backs off as the shoots come out. The watering is scheduled to stop when the lima bean crop plays out. All this is transparent to the user.
