This project is for an education foundation related to a specific breed of dog. The foundation has an extensive archive of information on the breed's development and history. The initial site that this theme is for will be for a basic website describing the organization and introducing the archive. The archive will be developed in the second phase of development and may or may not be incorporated into this theme. The archive will be hierarchical with several categories and subcategories. The archived information consists mostly of image and video content. Your input about how this theme will integrate with the future archive will be welcomed.
The general feel of this project should be more historic. There will be lots of black and white images used. The site should reflect this but I don't want it to feel too dark. A dark background is probably a good idea, but the content area should be white. I do not want to use white text on a black background for the main content areas. I would like to see the incorporation of some color to the site. I don't want the site to be limited exclusively to black and white. I'm a programmer, not a designer and would like input from you, the designer, on what you think will look good. Of course, my customer will be the ultimate judge of what looks good but we will be looking for some of your input in this area.
The following content areas, which will be accessible in Drupal for block placement, are required.
The three content areas for content (Content Top, Content, and Content Bottom) combined should be as tall as the left and right sidebars. The footer should be below both the left and right sidebars as well as the three content areas. See the Figure 1 for an example (attached).
Above the content areas will be a header. This section will contain Drupal's Primary Links and otherwise primarily consist of image and flash content. See Figure 2 (attached) for a sketch of the header.
The entire background of the header section will be an image that shows some trees and the head of a dog. The top and bottom of the image should be cropped tightly on the dog's head as shown in the sketch.
On the left side of the image will be a box for the Primary Links. The background should be faded a bit so that the background image is visible but the focus of this area needs to be on the menu. The theme should allow for up a secondary level of primary links that will serve as the submenu.
An important part of the header image will be a flash filmstrip to the right of the dog head. The filmstrip should generally run along the bottom of the header. It should be curved slightly (i.e. it should not be completely straight and should not have very dramatic curves). Compare, [url removed, login to view] (curves are way too dramatic) with [url removed, login to view] (which is too straight). Here is something that is a little more appropriate [url removed, login to view]
You will be provided with up to 15 images that will be placed on the image portion of the filmstrip. You will have more images than there are spaces for images. I'm open to suggestions on how the transitions should be made but something as simple as randomly changing one of the images for another with the old image fading into the new one should work. The images will be provided to you in a variety of formats. It will be up to you to resize and scale the images as appropriate to fit into the flash filmstrip. Also note: Some of the images will be vertical and might not be able to be cropped to fit into a horizontal film strip. In these cases, you will need to add black sections to the left and right of the image to feature the vertical image in the horizontal space. An example that is similar to what I'm describing can be seen in the top image at [url removed, login to view]
The organization's logo should be incorporated into the design. The logo is attached. As described above, the logo is black and white. It will need to be incorporated into the layout. We're open to your suggestions on where you think the logo should appear.
I will be providing you with access to our development server where I expect that you will install the theme for my review. I do not want to receive a zip or [url removed, login to view] file with the theme with the expectation that I install it myself. At the conclusion of the project, I expect to be provided with the FLA file(s) used to create the Flash as well as the layered source files for the graphic design as well as any fonts that may have been used in creating the images.
The site should be designed for users on 1024x768 screen resolution and at minimum should be fully functional in Internet Explorer (version 6 and higher), Firefox (and other Mozilla browsers), Safari and Opera on Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. The main content area should be visible without horizontal scrolling by users using 800x600. The theme should be standards compliant. I would prefer that the layout be done in CSS but I'm not sure if it is possible to do this in IE6. If not, a table based layout is acceptable. Support for the older browsers is important because many of the people who will be accessing this site are older and are using older computers. There are several people on the organization's board of directors who still have dial-up Internet access (but we do not have to accommodate them).
I need to see your layout mockup within 2 days of starting this project. I would like to see a Drupal theme within 4 days of approving the layout. When making design changes or fixing bugs in the theme (if any), I expect that most changes be completed in 24 hours. I hope to have feedback on all steps within 24 hours but at a few stages in this project, I'll need to submit your work to my client and to their board of directors. I will try to give you a time frame of when I expect to have complete client feedback so you can schedule your other projects. In most cases, I expect this will take about 72 hours.
I will make a 50% deposit into the escrow account at the inception of this project. If you want me to make a full payment into escrow before installing the theme, I will once I have reviewed and approved your layout. The layout submitted for approval does not need to be (and really shouldn't be) a sliced up HTML file. I JPG mockup of your proposed layout is fine. Once the project is complete, I will release the funds from escrow after which you can send me over the design files. I am open to other payment arrangements but these must be arranged before I award you this project. If you would like to discuss alternative payment arrangements, please discuss this via PM in advance.
