The category is the part that needs judgement, since statements rarely carry one and merchant strings are messy. How I would do it: - Extraction per statement with the text layer where available, OCR only where needed, so accuracy stays high - Transaction rows parsed with date, merchant and amount, credits and debits signed consistently - Category assigned by rules over normalised merchant names, with an AI step for the ones rules do not catch, and a flag on anything uncertain - Running total cross-checked against each statement's own total, which catches any missed or duplicated line before you see it - One continuous sheet, all statements, nothing else added I build Python document pipelines in production for industrial clients.
