Numbers from scans are a different problem from text, and worth saying how I handle it. A misread digit does not look wrong. "8" read as "3", a misplaced decimal, a 0 taken for an O - none of it stands out on the page the way a misspelt word does, and it will sit in your spreadsheet looking perfectly reasonable. So on numeric scans I do not trust a single pass, mine or any tool's: - Every figure typed by eye, then the column verified against the source again rather than skimmed. - Where the original table has a total, I let the spreadsheet recompute it from the figures I entered and check it against the printed total. If they disagree, I have found my own error before you ever see the file - that one trick catches most of what slips through. - Layout and row order mirroring the original exactly, so your cross-check is line-by-line. - Unclear figures left visibly flagged in place, with a note of the page and cell.
