I have a basic electronic circuit design to trigger a LOW-HIGH-LOW signal from a PIR device. The trigger is not enough to to activate the required integrated chip. The circuit is standard, I need the correct component values to ensure the trigger is high enough to activate the chip. Circuit power is 3.3v (not 5v) (PIR runs fine on 3.3v) NOTE: I have a several recommendations of "guessing" which haven't worked, looking for an answer based on best practice. Thanks

Hi, I can help calculate the correct component values to ensure your PIR-triggered signal reliably drives the integrated chip. Rather than guessing, we’ll analyze the circuit electrically: Measure the PIR output voltage swing and current-driving capability. Determine the logic-high voltage requirements of the target IC. If necessary, design a simple level-shifter or buffer stage (e.g., transistor or logic buffer) with resistor/capacitor values calculated to maintain clean edges and sufficient drive. Calculate any timing components if the HIGH pulse duration must be adjusted. With this approach, we can ensure the LOW-HIGH-LOW pulse reliably triggers the IC, following electronics best practices rather than trial-and-error. If you provide a schematic and the IC model, I can calculate exact resistor/capacitor values and suggest the minimal buffer stage needed. — Juan

Hi , I recently completed a very similar project. I can show u sample. Questions: 1) What exact target IC (part number), its supply voltage, and guaranteed VIH/VIL thresholds and input leakage? 2) What PIR module (e.g., HC‑SR501/BISS0001)? Is the output push‑pull or open‑collector, and what Voh/Vol and source/sink current are guaranteed? Suggestions: 1) If the IC runs at 5 V and you just need a higher, clean logic HIGH: use a 74HCT14 Schmitt trigger as a level shifter/cleaner. Power at 5 V; feed the 3.3 V PIR directly into one input (HCT sees 3.3 V as HIGH). Add 1 k in series and 100 nF to ground at the input to suppress chatter. Output is crisp 0/5 V. To generate a defined pulse width, add RC to the input: e.g., R=100 k, C=100 nF ≈ 10 ms (use T ≈ 0.8·R·C with HCT14 thresholds); add a diode antiparallel to R for fast reset if needed. 2) If the IC needs >5 V (e.g., CD4xxx at 12 V): use a common‑emitter NPN level shifter (avoid emitter follower). Example values: - For 5 V rail: 2N3904, Rc (pull‑up) = 10 k to 5 V, base resistor Rb = 47 k from PIR, 100 k base‑emitter to ensure OFF. Output: LOW <0.2 V, HIGH ≈ 5 V. - For 12 V rail: Rc = 47 k to 12 V, Rb = 100 k, 100 k base‑emitter. Keeps Ib ≈ 25 µA, Ic ≈ 250 µA, adequate for CMOS inputs with low leakage. If input is TTL‑threshold at 5 V, prefer 74HCT14 solution. You send me a message ok, lets discuss and btw my portfolio is uploaded here and on my website. Best Regards, Sid
