Project - Explainable Network Intrusion Detection System Using Hybrid Deep Learning and Machine Learning Techniques ------Component Descriptions--------- Data Acquisition This module captures raw network traffic from benchmark datasets (e.g., CICIDS2017) and from simulated enterprise environments representing bank network operations. Data Preprocessing This phase involves cleaning missing or infinite values, encoding categorical data, and scaling numerical features. These steps are critical for the effective training of ML/DL models (Garikapati et al., 2025). Feature Engineering Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is applied to reduce dimensionality while retaining critical data patterns. In parallel, feature importance scores from Random Forest are used to retain only relevant attributes (Ullah and Mahmoud, 2022). Data Balancing (SMOTE) The Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) generates synthetic examples of underrepresented classes such as infiltration or bot attacks. This helps the model learn from a more balanced distribution (Chawla et al., 2002). Hybrid Model Training Three core classifiers are trained: Random Forest (robust to noise), XGBoost (handles structured data well), and Multi-Layer Perceptron (captures complex nonlinear features). These models are then combined using a soft voting mechanism to aggregate their probabilistic outputs (Garikapati et al., 2025). Prediction Layer This module classifies network traffic into attack categories or benign behavior. Probabilities from each classifier are used to generate ensemble predictions. Explainability Layer (SHAP) Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) are integrated post hoc to interpret each prediction. SHAP computes the contribution of each feature towards a given decision, offering transparent and audit-ready outputs (Lundberg and Lee, 2017). Output Dashboard A graphical interface presents the detection results, SHAP summary plots, and system logs, allowing security analysts and administrators to make informed decisions. The architecture ensures traceability, compliance alignment, and adaptability to evolving threat landscapes, key requirements for banks operating under financial regulations. To assess the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed hybrid intrusion detection system, a combination of widely accepted performance metrics will be used. These metrics are suitable for classification tasks and provide a comprehensive understanding of how well the system detects malicious activity while maintaining transparency in its decision-making. -----Evaluation------- • Accuracy: Measures the overall correctness of the system by calculating the proportion of total correct predictions (both threats and normal traffic) over all predictions. It provides a general indication of performance but may be misleading in imbalanced datasets. • F1-Score: The harmonic means of precision and recall, providing a balanced metric that is particularly useful when dealing with imbalanced datasets. It helps evaluate the trade-off between false positives and false negatives. • Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC-AUC): Assesses the system’s ability to distinguish between normal and malicious activity across different classification thresholds. A higher score indicates better discrimination capability. Note - I need the documentation of the project as well.
