I’d start by matching the bank statements against the existing records, identify missing, duplicated or incorrectly categorized transactions, and reconcile the balances to the statement closing figures. Once the accounts are clean, the agreed opening balances and historical data can be transferred into Xero and checked against the reconciled source records. I’m very comfortable with Excel-based financial reconciliation and structured financial data, so I can also build a clear exception list for anything that needs your confirmation instead of making assumptions about unclear transactions. The final check would be that the reconciled bank balances and transferred Xero balances tie back to the source records.
