நிலவின் கடைசி விதை நூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு ஒருமுறை, சந்திரவனம் என்ற மாயக் காட்டின் நடுவில் ஒரு அதிசய மரம் மலரும். அந்த மரத்தில் ஒரே ஒரு கனியே விளையும்—நிலவின் விதை. அதை காப்பாற்றுபவரால் மட்டுமே உலகின் மந்திர சக்தியை பாதுகாக்க முடியும் என்று ஒரு பழமையான தீர்க்கதரிசனம் கூறியது. பதினேழு வயதான வீரன் ஒரு சாதாரண ஆடு மேய்ப்பவன். ஒரு பௌர்ணமி இரவில், கருமையான நிழல்கள் காட்டை விழுங்குவதை அவன் கண்டான். அப்போது வெள்ளை நிற நரி ஒன்று அவன் முன் தோன்றியது. “நேரம் மிகவும் குறைவு,” என்றது நரி. “நிலவின் விதை அழிந்துவிட்டால், இந்த உலகின் மாயம் என்றென்றும் மறைந்து விடும்.” வீரன் நரியுடன் சந்திரவனத்தை அடைந்தான். அங்கே ஒரு கொடிய நிழல் அரக்கன் விதையை கைப்பற்ற முயன்றான். வீரனிடம் வாளோ மந்திரமோ இல்லை. ஆனால் அவன் அச்சமின்றி விதையை இரு கைகளிலும் ஏந்தினான். அந்த நொடியில் விதை நிலவைப் போல ஒளிரத் தொடங்கியது. அதன் ஒளி காட்டை முழுவதும் நிரப்பியது. நிழல் அரக்கன் புகையாக கரைந்து மறைந்தான். மரங்கள் மீண்டும் உயிர் பெற்றன, மலர்கள் மலர்ந்தன, வானம் ஆயிரம் நட்சத்திரங்களால் ஜொலித்தது. வெள்ளை நரி புன்னகைத்து, “உண்மையான மந்திரம் சக்தியில் இல்லை; அச்சமற்ற இதயத்தில்தான் இருக்கிறது,” என்றது. அன்றிலிருந்து வீரன் மீண்டும் ஒரு சாதாரண இளைஞனாக வாழ்ந்தான். ஆனால் ஒவ்வொரு பௌர்ணமி இரவிலும், சந்திரவனத்திலிருந்து ஒரு வெள்ளி ஒளி அவன் வீட்டை வந்து தொட்டது. அந்த மாயக் காடு தனது இளம் காவலனை இன்னும் நினைவில் வைத்திருந்தது.
