English skills:

You will probably have a degree in English and preferably a second degree in science (or health, medical or nursing degree or training).

By English, we strictly mean not the US version. Our end users speak English as derived from England, in Australia and New Zealand.

Spelling skills:

You will be a naturally gifted with advanced and exceptional spelling skills, preferably understanding the Latin and Greek derivatives thus making your spell checking of legal and medical words a more natural undertaking.

Typing speeds:

Your typing speed must be at least 30 wpm with high accuracy, and you should be prepared to work in your own time to reach the order of 50 - 60 wpm min. within six (6) months. However your typing skills are considered secondary to your spelling, grammatical and English language skills.

Self Motivated:

You should be a well motivated person. Furthermore, you should be a self starter - and be prepared to work in a disciplined manner from home. Honesty in advising hours worked is essential, and your hours are checked against averages. In summary you are motivated, conscientious and well self ordered.

Quality Assurance:

You will be subjected to ongoing quality control audits.

The work:

You will receive work in MS word format which has already been transcribed by medical transcriptionists and which has already been proof read by a medicall proof reader. You will also receive the audio file from which the MS word document was transcribed - typically with a speaking rate between 60 - 120 wpm.

While it is expected you can spot medical words which have been misspelt (using a dedicated medical spell checking CD ROM) your primary function is to play the audio tape while reading the MS word file and correct ALL the non technical words if spelt wrongly and if necessary amend the file to read with strictly proper punctuation, and depending upon your assessment of the intent of the person dictating, amend grammar. You will be provided with client by client notes and prompts on-line such as - allow personalization, make strictly formal, etc.

You will be expected to be sharp enough to listen to the audio and read the MS word file in 'real' time i.e. at the same rate as dictated (save for very fast dictation) and only to pause the audio when a correction is needed - or recourse to a spell checker needed.

You must pay attention to the intent of the dictating party and not be over technical i.e. allow the persons individual style to permeate but catch spelling, punctuation and serious grammar lapses. Therefore you must exercise a judgment in terms of grammar - while the rules of spelling and punctuation must be strictly applied. Bonus points (in terms of dollars) awarded to those who also always spot and correct medical terms - and some will be inserted to test you.

Our requirement is for graduates or with a little more experience, of which there are many, so if you are very experienced we may not be able to run to the hourly rate that experience demands i.e. the laws of supply prevail, that is to say, the supply of the graduated.

Moreover, if you live in a low cost country, such as India, Pakistan, Philippines, Panama etc. you must expect we can not offer the same hourly rate as a person in a very high cost country such as Australians demand - so you must consider a comparative hourly rate which by your standards is a high rate, but by Australia standards may not be. For example, it costs in US dollars $2 for a cup of coffee in Australia at a cafe and $15 - $20 for a good single main meal (without starters, desert or wine) at a cafe, and even more in a very good restaurant.

As a further relative example we have offers of employment from medical specialists (as proof readers) in India at $US12 an hour - and that is for various persons with about 20 years experience in neuro and orthopedic surgery, and involves persons serving on University board of examiners.

Having said that, while our opening hourly rate may be low, if after three months your accuracy and speed is of an high order, and if you demonstrate (as a bonus to us) advancing medical and legal spelling skills, we will increase your hourly pay to approach Australian levels, even if you live in a low cost country.

Payment is by Western Union in $US sent in the third week of each month. You are a sub contractor and we deduct no tax (if you are an Australian citizen you must bill us GST). We pay to any account in the world - even tax friendly countries. The legal basis of any agreement is australian law.

We pay bonuses. On the flip side in extreme cases we may deduct from fees payable for persistent errors.

If you work out in this role you may be offered higher paid work as specialist medical proof reader.

Hours:

How many hours and on what days can you work? After hours work (your time) is quite OK, so this may be a second job.

PC:

What type? You will need a foot pedal, high quality head phones and a medical CD ROM spell checker - all at your cost. Do you now have any of them? If not will you undertake to acquire them if we commit to a minimum number of hours? You can check those items cost on the Net and they vary from country to country.
