a double-essay (500-600 words, worth double value).
In both Executive Suite and in The Desk Set the protagonist is a man who represents the new wave of science and technology in post-WW II America. Mac Walling in Executive Suite is a modernist designer and engineer who wants to use better methods to create better products--something workers can be proud of and customers will truly appreciate. Richard Sumner in The Desk Set wants to use computer technology to make work both more efficient but also more humane for those doing the work--freeing workers from repetitive tasks so that they can concentrate on higher-level intellectual tasks such as analysis and interpretation. These men represent America's optimistic belief in the values of new technologies in the post-WW II era, a time when America's technological achievements in that war seemed to presage similar achievements in peace. It was also a time of unprecedented economic growth. Write an essay in which you compare these two men and how, in specific ways, these characters embody the values of the new technologies designed to make all lives better. Or, as Dow Chemical used to say "Better Products for Better Living through Chemistry."
