Hi — the phrase in your brief I'd build the edit around is "maintaining the author's voice". For a 4–7 book the trap is the opposite of most copy edits: it's easy to make every sentence correct and flat. The job is to keep the rhythm a child hears when it's read aloud while fixing what would trip an early reader. Two questions to scope it: roughly how many words, and is it meant to be read to the child or by the child (that decides the decodability bar)? My approach, in three passes: first a read-aloud pass, reading every page out loud and marking where the ear stumbles; second the copy edit proper (grammar, punctuation, consistency of names and tense, page-turn logic against the illustrations if they exist); third an age check — sentence length, sight-word load, any word a six-year-old can't decode or infer, and whether the learning theme lands through the story rather than through a lesson. Everything in Track Changes with a short note on every non-obvious change. Background: I taught early-grade children for two years in a classroom and now write and edit learning content for that age group, so I know what a 5-year-old actually reads back to you. Within the same fee I'll add a one-page readability report and a second light proof after you accept the changes. I do this full time, so I deliver 10x faster and 5x lesser in cost.
