I want an HID Omnikey 3021 smart-card reader—converted so it connects through a standard USB-C port instead of USB-A, while still providing full-speed data communication and bus power. I only need the cable/connector side removed and replaced with a USB-C connector so the device enumerates and draws power over USB-C just as reliably as it does over USB-A. There should be no cable, just a USB-C connector so that the device is as small as possible. Here is what will make the job a success: • The finished reader plugs into any standard USB-C host and both powers up and transfers smart-card data without errors. • All USB-C wiring follows the spec’s pin-out and current-handling guidelines. • You supply clear documentation (schematic or wiring map, parts used and short step-by-step notes) so the mod can be reproduced or serviced later. I can purchase the device and have it shipped to you, or you can purchase it ~£15inc shipping via amazon. Please let me know how you would approach the conversion and your estimated turnaround time and price + shipping. Ideally UK based due to shipping.

Hi there, This is a clean and very feasible hardware mod—I’ve done similar USB interface conversions and compact integrations on embedded devices. Approach: The HID Omnikey 3021 is a USB 2.0 full-speed device, so the conversion to USB-C is straightforward if done correctly: • Remove USB-A connector and expose D+, D−, VBUS, GND • Add a USB-C receptacle (device/UFP mode) • Implement correct CC pull-down resistors (5.1kΩ Rd on CC1/CC2) to ensure proper host detection • Route D+/D− with controlled length and minimal stubs to preserve signal integrity • Ensure mechanical reinforcement so the connector is robust without a cable No active PD controller is needed since this is a low-power USB 2.0 device. Deliverables: • Wiring/schematic diagram • Parts list (USB-C connector + passives) • Step-by-step mod guide • Photos or annotated references Timeline: 2–3 days after receiving the unit Location: If UK shipping is required, I can coordinate or guide a local implementation if needed Key focus will be reliability, compactness, and full USB compliance so it behaves exactly like the original—just in USB-C form. Happy to proceed once we confirm logistics. Best regards

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I’ve read this closely—this isn’t just a connector swap, it’s a proper USB-C device conversion, and I’m comfortable doing it cleanly and reliably. I’ve handled similar USB-A → USB-C mods where the goal is “plug-and-work” on any host. For your reader, I’d keep the USB 2.0 interface intact (D+/D−), add correct CC pull-downs for UFP mode, and integrate a compact USB-C receptacle or plug directly onto the PCB while maintaining shielding and mechanical stability. Approach: • Open unit, assess PCB pads and space • Remove USB-A lead/connector • Add USB-C (with proper CC resistors, VBUS routing) • Reinforce mechanically (epoxy/bracket if needed) • Test on multiple USB-C hosts for enumeration + stability Milestones: Teardown + fitment plan Wiring + connector integration Functional testing (power + data) Documentation (wiring map + parts + notes) Quick question: do you prefer a flush USB-C male plug or a recessed female port? Happy to proceed.

Hi, I can modify your HID Omnikey 3021 Smart Card Reader to use a direct USB-C connector while preserving full USB 2.0 data integrity and proper bus-power compliance, ensuring it enumerates reliably on any USB-C host. My approach would involve carefully replacing the USB-A cable termination with a correctly wired USB-C male connector (including proper CC resistors and power/data line mapping) and validating stable smart-card communication under load. I can also provide a clear wiring diagram and documentation of the modification, with an estimated turnaround of 2–4 days depending on shipping and parts availability. Thanks.

Hi there, I’ve read your brief and I can convert an HID Omnikey 3021 so it directly uses a USB‑C plug (no cable) while retaining full‑speed HID smart‑card communication and bus power. I’ll remove the existing USB‑A tail, implement a USB‑C receptacle wiring with proper CC resistor configuration, VBUS and GND routing, and preserve the D+/D− full‑speed traces with good impedance and strain relief so the reader enumerates reliably. I have hands‑on experience modifying USB2.0 devices, routing clean full‑speed signals, and documenting wiring and test procedures. Deliverables will include a clear wiring schematic/map, a parts list (connector, resistors, any ferrites), and short step‑by‑step notes so the mod can be reproduced or serviced. Next step: confirm whether you’ll ship a unit to me or prefer I buy one and I’ll provide a short pre‑work checklist and start the mod. Do you want the modified reader to be purely bus‑powered at USB2.0 current levels, or should I design for higher current draw (USB‑C Rd/CC configuration or PD) to support any future add‑ons? Best regards, Everett

Hello, I’ve read your brief carefully. I’ve converted USB-A smart-card readers to USB-C before and can deliver a neat, cable-free Omnikey 3021 mod that powers and enumerates as a UFP (device) at full-speed with robust wiring and clear documentation. My approach is to open the reader, remove the existing USB-A pigtail, install a compact USB‑C connector or plug-breakout, wire VBUS, D+/D- and GND directly, and implement proper CC pull-down resistors (Rd) on CC1 and CC2 so the host recognises the reader as a device. I’ll follow the USB‑C spec for pin mapping and current handling, ensure EMI-friendly routing and strain relief, and test with multiple hosts to confirm reliable smart-card data transfer and power draw. Deliverables: the modified reader, a wiring schematic/wiring map, parts list and short step-by-step notes so the mod can be reproduced or serviced. I’m UK-based and can work from your shipped unit or procure the reader for you. Typical turnaround for prototyping, testing and documentation is 3-5 days. Do you prefer a male USB-C plug or a compact panel-style receptacle for the device end, and will you ship the reader to me or should I purchase one for you? Best regards, Cindy Viorina

Hi there, I have read your requirements carefully, and I understand you need an HID Omnikey 3021 physically modified from USB-A to a compact USB-C direct connector, with full bus power + reliable smart-card data communication and clear documentation so the mod can be repeated later. I'm a new freelancer, but I have rich experience in this field. My approach would be to: -remove the existing USB-A cable/connector cleanly -fit a compact USB-C connector solution with correct USB 2.0 data + power wiring -make sure the device enumerates properly on standard USB-C hosts -keep the final form factor as small as possible -test power-up, card detection, and data communication -provide a simple wiring map / notes / parts list for future servicing or reproduction I understand this is not just a cosmetic connector swap — the USB-C side must be wired correctly so the reader stays stable and fully functional. I would focus on a neat hardware conversion, proper mechanical fit, and reliable testing before handoff. Estimated turnaround: 1–3 days after receiving the device Estimated price: £20 + shipping If you want, I can work from a device you ship to me, or I can source the reader first and handle the full conversion. I would be genuinely happy to work with you on this project. Best regards, Oluwatobi Okedairo

Hi, there. This is a straightforward but detail-sensitive USB hardware modification, and I can handle it cleanly. The OMNIKEY 3021 is a USB 2.0 full-speed device, so the conversion is mainly about correctly adapting the interface to USB-C while keeping enumeration and power behavior unchanged. My approach: - Remove the USB-A connector and expose the D+, D−, VBUS, and GND lines - Integrate a USB-C male plug directly on the PCB (no cable) - Add correct CC pull-down resistors (Rd) to ensure proper host detection - Maintain controlled routing for D+/D− to preserve signal integrity - Ensure stable 5V bus power and proper grounding - Keep the form factor compact and mechanically robust Result: - Plug-and-play on any USB-C host - Reliable power + data (same behavior as original USB-A) - Clean, minimal, durable physical design Deliverables: - Modified working device - Wiring diagram / schematic - Parts list + short documentation for replication I can also source the unit if preferred. I’ll ensure the final result is compact, reliable, and compliant with USB-C basics. You can check my previous projects on my profile portfolio. Let me know how you’d like to proceed.
