CAN Bus Data Extraction & Vehicle Telematics Engineer – BS6 Trucks We are looking for an experienced CAN Bus / Automotive Embedded Systems / Vehicle Telematics engineer who can help us extract and decode CAN bus data from BS6-compliant commercial trucks. We currently have access to BS6 trucks and want to understand what data is available over the vehicle's CAN network, how to access it safely, and how to convert the raw CAN messages into meaningful vehicle parameters. Project Requirements The selected freelancer will be expected to help us with: Identifying the available CAN bus interfaces/networks in BS6 trucks. Determining the appropriate physical connection/interface for accessing CAN data. Capturing raw CAN frames from the vehicle. Identifying CAN IDs and message structures. Decoding raw CAN data into meaningful parameters wherever possible. Understanding CAN baud rate and communication configuration. Identifying relevant vehicle parameters such as: Vehicle speed Engine RPM Engine load Accelerator/throttle position Brake status Engine temperature Fuel level/fuel consumption Vehicle odometer Battery/alternator voltage DTC/fault information Engine status Gear information Wheel speed PTO status, if available Other available ECU/vehicle parameters Determining whether the data follows a standard such as J1939, OBD-II, UDS, or a manufacturer-specific CAN protocol. Providing guidance on CAN logging and analysis. Helping us build a repeatable method for collecting CAN data from multiple trucks/models. Important We are specifically interested in BS6 commercial trucks, so experience with modern heavy vehicles and their CAN networks is highly desirable. We understand that BS6 vehicles may have multiple CAN networks and that the availability and meaning of specific CAN parameters can vary depending on the truck manufacturer, model, ECU configuration, and CAN network. The freelancer should therefore be comfortable with reverse engineering and CAN protocol analysis, rather than relying only on standard OBD-II PIDs. Expected Deliverables We would ideally like the freelancer to provide: Recommended CAN interface/hardware setup. Physical connection/wiring guidance. CAN bus configuration, including baud rate where applicable. Raw CAN data logging methodology. CAN trace/log files from testing. CAN ID/message mapping. Decoded parameter list with: CAN ID Byte/bit position Length Scaling factor Offset Unit Description Identification of standard vs manufacturer-specific messages. Sample software/scripts for capturing and processing CAN data. Documentation explaining the complete setup so that our team can reproduce the process. Preferred Technical Experience Please apply if you have practical experience with one or more of the following: CAN Bus CAN FD SAE J1939 OBD-II UDS Automotive Ethernet Vehicle diagnostics ECU communication CAN reverse engineering CAN decoding Heavy commercial vehicles/trucks Automotive telematics Fleet management systems Embedded automotive systems SocketCAN CANoe/CANalyzer SavvyCAN PCAN Kvaser Vector CAN tools Arduino/ESP32/Raspberry Pi-based CAN interfaces Python/C/C++ for CAN data processing Ideal Freelancer The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience working directly with vehicle CAN networks, preferably commercial vehicles or trucks. Experience with Indian BS6 trucks or manufacturers operating in the Indian commercial-vehicle market would be a significant advantage. We are looking for someone who can work practically with the vehicle and CAN logs, not just provide theoretical information. Project Approach Initially, we would like to work with one truck as a proof of concept. The process would approximately be: Truck → CAN interface → Raw CAN capture → CAN ID analysis → Message decoding → Vehicle parameters → Software/API integration If the initial proof of concept is successful, there is potential for further work involving: Multiple truck models Multiple vehicle manufacturers Automated CAN decoding Telematics device integration Real-time CAN data acquisition Cloud/API integration Fleet monitoring applications Please Include in Your Proposal To help us evaluate your experience, please provide: A brief description of your CAN/automotive experience. Examples of CAN reverse-engineering projects you have completed. Whether you have worked with J1939 or heavy commercial vehicles. Which CAN hardware/tools you normally use. Whether you can physically guide us through the truck-side connection. Examples of CAN logs or decoded CAN data you have worked with, if you can share them. Your estimated time and cost for an initial proof of concept. Any information you would need from us before starting. Please mention “BS6 CAN” at the beginning of your proposal so we know you have read the complete requirement. We are open to working with an individual freelancer or an experienced automotive/CAN engineering team.

Your BS6 telematics project will fail if you cannot reverse-engineer manufacturer-specific CAN messages beyond standard J1939 PIDs. Most Indian OEMs use proprietary ECU protocols that require DBC file reconstruction from raw traffic analysis. Quick questions - are you planning to tap into the high-speed CAN (500 kbps) or the diagnostics CAN (250 kbps), and do you have existing relationships with truck OEMs for protocol documentation? Here is the architectural approach: - J1939 DECODING: Build a Python-based CAN sniffer using SocketCAN on Raspberry Pi 4 with MCP2515 interface to capture PGN frames and decode SPN parameters for engine RPM, fuel rate, and DTC codes. - REVERSE ENGINEERING: Use SavvyCAN to correlate raw CAN traffic with physical vehicle actions (throttle press, brake engage) to map proprietary message structures that standard OBD-II cannot access. - SCALABLE LOGGING: Design a fleet-ready data pipeline that logs CAN frames to InfluxDB with timestamp synchronization, enabling replay analysis across multiple truck models without re-decoding. I've reverse-engineered CAN protocols for 4 commercial vehicle projects including Tata and Ashok Leyland telematics systems. Let's schedule a 20-minute technical call to review your hardware setup before you invest in the wrong CAN interface.

BS6 CAN, I see that extracting and decoding CAN bus data from BS6-compliant commercial trucks requires a deep understanding of vehicle telematics and automotive embedded systems. I'd approach this by first identifying the available CAN bus interfaces and determining the appropriate physical connection for accessing CAN data. My goal is to capture raw CAN frames and decode them into meaningful vehicle parameters. I've worked with similar projects where the key to success lies in understanding the CAN protocol and baud rate configuration, so I'll make sure to analyze the CAN IDs and message structures carefully. The client can expect a detailed report on the decoded parameters, including vehicle speed, engine RPM, and fuel level, as well as guidance on CAN logging and analysis. I'm ready to start immediately and provide a recommended CAN interface setup, physical connection guidance, and sample software for capturing and processing CAN data.

Without a DBC file from the manufacturer, decoding CAN on BS6 trucks will have to be done by reverse engineering: on J1939, part of it is standard PGNs, but everything proprietary (MID-specific frames) will have to be guessed by correlating with actions in the cab. I don't have direct experience with truck buses, but I have written firmware for microcontrollers with sensors and actuators in C/C++. What make of truck is it, and is there access to the OBD port or only to the wiring?

Hi, CAN is my home ground: 8+ years in automotive embedded and test automation (BMS, steering, OBD, infotainment projects for OEM/Tier-1 clients) with the Vector toolchain, so this is exactly the kind of work I've done. How I'd approach BS6 trucks: 1) Interfaces: BS6 commercial vehicles generally expose SAE J1939 on the 9-pin Deutsch diagnostic connector (250/500 kbit/s), with OBD (ISO 15765/J1979 or J1939-73 DM messages) for emissions data. I'll confirm per truck model which pins and bitrates are live before anything is connected. 2) Safe access: listen-only mode first, no transmission onto the bus, using a proper adapter (PCAN-USB, Kvaser or a CANable/ESP32 with isolated transceiver depending on your budget and whether this becomes a fleet device). 3) Capture: python-can logging to BLF/ASC/CSV with timestamps, covering idle, driving, braking, regen/DPF events so all messages show up. 4) Decoding: J1939 29-bit IDs split into PGN/SA/priority, standard PGNs mapped to SPNs (engine speed, vehicle speed, fuel rate, coolant temp, odometer, DTCs via DM1, etc.) with cantools/DBC; unknown proprietary frames analysed by correlating signal changes with known events. 5) Deliverables: decoded parameter list with scaling/units, a reusable Python decoder + DBC file, and wiring/interface notes you can reuse across the fleet. You do the physical hookup following my step-by-step guide, I work remotely on the captures. Which truck makes/models are you starting with, and do you already have a CAN adapter?

You need CAN bus data reliably decoded from BS6 trucks into actionable telematics parameters, fast and repeatable. Here is my plan: connect via the OBD-II/J1939 diagnostic port using a CANalyzer or open-source equivalent, sniff live traffic, identify baud rates, map IDs, and decode frames against J1939 PGNs first since BS6 trucks predominantly follow this standard, then handle any OEM-proprietary layers. I will deliver a DBC file, a documented decode methodology, and a reusable logging pipeline you can deploy across your fleet. I have hands-on experience with J1939, UDS, and OBD-II across commercial vehicle ECUs, including FMS gateway data extraction and DTC interpretation. BS6 compliance means OBDII mandates are in play, which actually opens more standardized PIDs than earlier generations. Timeline: initial interface mapping and first decoded parameters in week one, full parameter list with DBC and logging guide by week two. Which truck OEMs are in your fleet, Tata, Ashok Leyland, Eicher, or mixed? That determines how deep the proprietary protocol layer goes and helps me scope this accurately from day one.

Hi, Decoding BS6 commercial truck telematics requires handling mixed J1939, UDS, and proprietary OEM frame structures over dual CAN buses without triggering gateway errors or disrupting ECU communications. Modern BS6 platforms often isolate standard J1939 broadcast data on the diagnostic port while routing high-frequency engine and chassis parameters through gated sub-networks. I will structure this logging framework by first confirming physical tap points using a non-intrusive capacitive probe or the J1939 Type 2 green connector to sample raw traffic at 250kbps and 500kbps. Next, I will capture baseline CAN traces during controlled engine states, running automated log parses to map standard J1939 PGNs for parameters like RPM, fuel rate, and speed alongside UDS parameter IDs for fault codes. Once identified, I will deliver a modular Python decoding script that transforms raw log files into structured JSON or CSV exports with dynamic rate-limiting to ensure clean data processing. We can execute Stage 1 for $100 in 2 business days, where I will deliver a structured CAN signal matrix template along with a sample Python parser that decodes standard J1939 PGNs from your initial raw log file so you can verify the workflow before moving forward. Are you tapping the CAN lines directly from the rear of the instrument cluster and OBD/J1939 port, or are you capturing data behind a central security gateway module? Best regards, Tumisang

BS6 CAN I deliver 100% work — 99.9% is not for me. Workflow Diagram Truck CAN ⟶⟶ Interface Setup ⟶⟶ Raw CAN Capture ⟶⟶ Baud/Network Analysis ⟶⟶ J1939/UDS/OBD Analysis ⟶⟶ CAN ID Mapping ⟶⟶ Signal Decoding ⟶⟶ Validation ⟶⟶ Python Processing ⟶⟶ Documentation I can handle this as a practical one-truck proof of concept, starting from raw CAN acquisition rather than assuming BS6 parameters are available through standard OBD-II PIDs. My embedded background includes Python, C/C++, ESP32/Raspberry Pi, serial/network communication, device data acquisition and protocol-level analysis. For this project I can work with SocketCAN-compatible hardware and analysis workflows using tools such as SavvyCAN, CAN utilities and Python processing. I’ll correlate controlled vehicle events—RPM changes, acceleration, braking, ignition and other known states—with timestamped CAN traffic to identify candidate IDs and signals. J1939 PGN/SPN data will be separated from UDS/OBD and manufacturer-specific traffic. For the initial POC, I estimate approximately 5–10 working days. We can finalize the POC cost after confirming the truck model, available diagnostic connector/CAN interface and exact testing setup. Hi, BS6 CAN: I work in automotive embedded. Most BS6 trucks expose SAE J1939 on the diagnostic connector, so a good part of your list comes from standard messages (engine RPM, for example, is in EEC1, PGN 61444). The harder part is that some OEMs put signals like gear, PTO or brake in proprietary frames. I find those with controlled tests while logging: press the brake, shift gear, engage PTO, and see which bytes change. Plan: 1. Adapter recommendation and a wiring guide for your truck's connector. I join a video call while your technician connects it. 2. Raw trace files + a Python script that captures and decodes live 3. DBC file + parameter table (ID, byte position, scale, offset, unit) for all 11 parameters 4. Documentation so you can repeat it on other trucks Which make/model are the trucks (Tata, Ashok Leyland, Eicher, BharatBenz)?
