The thing I'd settle before we touch a host pool is identity, because it's where most first AVD builds stall. Session hosts must join something — AD DS, Entra Domain Services, or Entra join — and that choice determines everything downstream, including whether FSLogix works at all. The specific trap: Azure Files for profile containers needs two permission layers, not one. Azure RBAC governs share-level access, NTFS ACLs govern directory-level. Set only RBAC — which the portal makes it easy to assume is enough. Session plan: 1. Confirm identity model and licensing. 2. vNet, subnets, NSGs, DNS resolution to the domain. 3. Storage account: both RBAC and NTFS layers, verified. 4. Host pool, session hosts, image choice. 5. FSLogix config, profile tested with a real user. 6. App groups, workspace, user assignment. 7.
