I need someone to write a description of circumstances so my husband can apply for a post PhD grant.
He needs to explain his situation and reasons why he has been/is disadvantaged. My husband and I have 3 children. Takoda, 7, is severely disabled. He can not communicate or walk or toilet or anything independent. He also hasn’t epilepsy. He was diagnosed as a baby when my husband was in 2nd year of his undergrad. Despite this, my husband excelled and received first class honours. After this he was accepted into PhD program in anthropology (he received an equity scholarship). He completed his thesis on fathers’ experiences raising children with disabilities. He did his field work in Arizona, Ohio and Massachusetts, USA. He felt ill with Lyme disease which went untreated. He was very sick during 2016/2017. He was bedridden. He had a suicide attempt which forced us to borrow $40000 to get experimental treatment in Germany . The treatment was somewhat successful . He was no longer bedridden but still suffered with intermittent pain, fatigue and anxiety. Through it all he hasn’t given up and has worked so hard to complete his PhD. Most impressively he was just passed without revisions from both examiners. Unfortunately, he is behind his peers with work experience. Due to his illness he was unable to take up the same teaching/tutorial jobs as those in his cohort. He has the qualification but that is all. His academic CV is bereft of work experience etc he published 2 online articles (both on chronic illness) and one journal article (that was in the works from before he was sick). I’d like a letter to explain his experiences, speak to his tenacity and work ethic that he was able to complete his PhD (without need for revisions). He is the father of a severely disabled son plus 2 younger daughters (5 & 2). He has completed his honours and PhD to the highest degree despite these challengers (including the illness). He would just like a chance.
It only needs to be 500 words or less. Use as much or as little as you think is appropriate.
Here is what is expected: the grant is to help turn his thesis into a manuscript for publication. This was recommended by both examiners who read his thesis.
A description of circumstances (no more than 500 words), including:
Details of employment since PhD graduation - zero he only just was confirmed passed
Any constraints/barriers to academic career progress (financial, employment, family responsibilities)
The time to be devoted to the fellowship - full time / home office
Any institutional support the applicant has arranged to receive if successful - his PhD supervisor is happy to support him in writing his manuscript
