You will read this assigned article [login to view URL] connected to this week’s Earth and environmental science material. Your goal is to understand the article, connect it to class concepts, and explain how what you learned in class helped you better understand the article. You will create a 5-slide Google Slides presentation, present it using Zoom, and save your recording to the Zoom cloud. Your presentation should be clear, organized, and focused on environmental literacy: understanding environmental information, evaluating it thoughtfully, and explaining it using scientific concepts. Learning Goals By completing this assignment, you will be able to: Summarize a current environmental science article accurately and concisely. Connect real-world environmental issues to course concepts. Use scientific figures from class to explain your understanding. Practice communicating science clearly through a short presentation. Materials Needed Assigned article Class notes/slides from earlier in the week (found on Canvas>Files) Google Slides presentation Zoom account Access to Zoom cloud recording Presentation Requirements Your presentation must include 5 slides Slide 1: Article Information Include: Title of the article Source/publication Date published Your name Example: “Climate Change Is Making Heat Waves More Dangerous” Source: NASA Climate News Published: March 15, 2024 Presented by: Alex Smith Slide 2: Very Short Summary Your summary should answer: What is the article about? What issue is being discussed? Why does it matter? Keep this slide short. Aim for 3–5 bullet points. Do not copying directly from the article Slide 3: Class Concept #1 and Your “A-Ha Moment” Choose one concept from class that helped you better understand the article. Your slide must include: The name of the class concept A figure, diagram, graph, or image from class A short explanation of how this concept helped you understand the article Your “a-ha moment” An “a-ha moment” is when something from the article made more sense because of what you learned in class. Example explanation: My a-ha moment was realizing that the article’s discussion of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide connects directly to the carbon cycle figure from class. The article described carbon emissions from fossil fuels, and the class figure helped me understand how human activity moves carbon from long-term storage into the atmosphere. Slide 4: Class Concept #2 and Your Second “A-Ha Moment” Choose a second class concept that helped you understand the article. Your slide must include: A different class concept from Slide 3 A figure, diagram, graph, or image from class A short explanation of how this concept helped you understand the article A second “a-ha moment” This should show that you can connect the article to more than one idea from class. Slide 5: Reflection Conclude your presentation by explaining in 2–3 sentences how this article helped you see the connection between class material and real-world environmental issues. Class Schedule: 1 Hour 20 Minutes 0–10 minutes: Introduction and Instructions Student reads and understand the assignment: Purpose of the assignment Article connection to weekly class material Slide expectations Zoom recording instructions Grading criteria Students open the article, student work log, Google Slides, and class materials. 10–30 minutes: Read and Annotate the Article Students read the assigned article carefully. While reading, students should mark or write down: Main environmental issue Key evidence or examples Parts that connect to class Confusing or surprising points Possible “a-ha moments” Suggested annotation questions: What is the article’s main claim? What evidence does the article use? What class concept helps explain this? What do I understand better now because of class? What seems incomplete or needs more explanation? 30–55 minutes: Create Google Slides Students build their 5-slide presentation. Recommended timing: Slide 1: 3 minutes Slide 2: 7 minutes Slide 3: 8 minutes Slide 4: 8 minutes Slide 5: 7 minutes Students should use short bullet points rather than long paragraphs. 55–70 minutes: Present and Record on Zoom Students present their Google Slides using Zoom. They should: Start a Zoom meeting. Share their Google Slides screen. Put their Google Slides in presentation mode Record the presentation to the cloud. Present clearly and professionally. Stop recording when finished. Make sure the recording saves to the Zoom cloud. Require presentation length: 1:30-2 minutes (longer presentations will not be graded) 70–80 minutes: Submit Students submit: Google Doc link Zoom cloud recording link Student Checklist Before submitting, make sure you have: Slide 1 includes article title, source, date, and your name. Slide 2 gives a short summary in your own words. Slide 3 uses one class concept and one figure from class. Slide 3 explains an “a-ha moment.” Slide 4 uses a second class concept and one figure from class. Slide 4 explains a second “a-ha moment.” Slide 5 gives your reflections on this article and what you learned in class Your presentation was recorded in Zoom. Your Zoom recording was saved to the cloud. You submitted both the Google Slides link and Zoom recording link. What to submit: 2 url links - one to your Zoom presentation and one to Google Slides Double check you have changed the sharing settings to "anyone with a link can edit" for the Google Slides, and "anyone with a link can view" for the Zoom presentation. If your sharing settings aren't in the correct format, your assignment will not be graded. If you don't know how to change sharing setting on Google Slides, the instructions are here on slide #2.
