The French farmhouse look comes from how the spaces flow, so the kitchen and dining are the heart, which means the island has to anchor that, pulling people in, and I'd build that first, so the rest of the layout makes sense around it, using SketchUp for the 3D model and then exporting to AutoCAD for the detailed architectural plans.
