Old B/W Photograph Restoration - 1878

I want to restore an old b/w photograph from around 1878. It is on the file named [login to view URL] This image is quite a poor one. The detail at the bottom left is to be retained, but otherwise I want the background to be replaced by a consistent shade of grey. To help you interpret the fuzzy facial features I have also supplied a much sharper image of the individual which dates from eighteen years previously, under the filename [login to view URL] I don't want you to do anything with this photo except to use it for reference. For example, the 1878 file that you are to restore includes (I think) a hard-to-discern moustache, and the 1860 reference photo shows (I think) the same moustache in much clearer detail. Similarly I've attached another file, [login to view URL], which dates from much later, but which gives you a very good reference-point in regard to other facial features and it should help you - if help is needed - when you set about restoring the image that I want you to restore (prtrait-2). My judgment is that the 1878 image does not show a beard - but maybe your experience in these matters might tell you, in contradiction, "yes, there is a beard" ? I wish to receive the finished restored print as a fine-detailed black and white jpg file.
