We specialize in the inspection, maintenance and re-manufacture of offshore exploration drilling equipment and are looking to develop a system whereby our customers can view the current condition of their equipment which we inspect. This will require the following:
a. The database is to be hosted in the cloud by a service such as Azure or AWS to ensure high availability.
b. The virtual server specs are to be scalable such that the initial hosting fees are kept to a minimum.
c. The DB software used must take into account the locally available skills for future support as well as the licensing fees – i.e. open source vs licensed. MS SQL vs MySQL?
2. Front End GUI:
a. This will be the client facing interface and as such will need to be exceptionally slick in keeping with our brand image. This will require some advanced interface skills, however the costs of these skills will be the driver for how far we go.
b. To be web based.
c. Will allow the customer to view current equipment conditions by rig in a rig summary list. From the rig summary list there will be a detailed item condition status.
d. Will also include the generation of PDF based reports of component level inspections.
3. Back End Interface:
a. This interface will be used internally for the manual entry of legacy data and will not need to be pretty. Function over form.
b. This will require the same inputs as the mobile inspection app below.
4. Mobile Inspection App:
a. This will be run on android tablets on site (onboard an offshore rig or at a local yard) and will need to have various different forms that allow the entry of inspection data. This data will be in the form of dimensions, photographs and other measurements.
b. We will initially start by attaching barcodes or QR codes to each piece of equipment and the item will need to be identifiable by this method as well as by manually entering a serial number. This might be improved on by the use of RFID tags in future.
c. Most inspection types will include photographs taken by the inspector using the tablet’s camera. We would like for the app to include this functionality as well as some form of photo manipulation – i.e. to be able to crop, zoom and rotate the image to fit a specified dimension. This functionality will enable the automatic report generation.
d. One additional requirement that we have is that the mobile app should be able to work offline, with a local cache of the database and all entries. The tablet on which it runs will often lack internet connectivity whilst inspections are taking place. We would like these inspection entries to be captured offline and then to sync when connectivity is available.
5. Report Generation:
a. For each inspection that is carried out, we require that the database is able to generate reports automatically, running queries of the data and pulling out specific attributes, loading photographs, etc.
b. These reports are to be accessible from all three interfaces.
We have generated some flowcharts of how we see the system being structured, along with a PPT document of how we would like the front end GUI designed. These will be provided at a later stage.
