Role Freelance 3D / Mechanical Designer Deliverable Full CAD (internal + external) + 3D-print-ready STL prototype Engagement Milestone-based contract; NDA required before files shared — a standalone, solar/battery-powered, LTE-connected camera mounted inside commercial vehicle. We are hiring a freelance 3D designer to design the complete enclosure: both the external housing (weatherproof, mountable, solar-integrated) and the internal layout (PCB, battery, camera module, antennas, connectors). The immediate goal is a 3D-print-ready prototype we can assemble and test. The design should be conceived so it can later transition to injection molding, but this contract targets a working printed prototype. What we need from you A manufacturable enclosure design that physically fits all internal components, seals to IP67, mounts securely inside a trailer, exposes the solar panel and camera correctly, and can be 3D-printed for a first working prototype. 2. Scope of Work 2.1 External Design ● Weatherproof housing (target IP67) with a sealed lens window for the camera and IR LEDs. ● Integrated or mounted solar panel surface on the external face (panel size provided). ● Mounting solution for interior trailer bulkhead / wall — versatile enough for dry van, reefer, and flatbed enclosures. Consider bracket + fasteners and/or VHB-compatible flat surface. ● Sealed cable entries/glands for three power inputs (solar, 12 V wired, trailer-light tap) and any external antenna. ● Clean, low-profile industrial design; minimize snag points and protrusions inside a cargo space. 2.2 Internal Design ● Component fit and layout for the full BOM (Section 3): main PCB, battery, camera module, LTE + GPS antennas, microphone port, accelerometer. ● Mounting bosses / standoffs / retention features for PCB and battery (screw bosses preferred for prototype serviceability). ● Thermal consideration: allow airflow / heat path for the modem and battery; keep battery away from heat sources. ● Antenna placement guidance: keep LTE/GPS antennas clear of metal and battery for signal; document keep-out zones. ● Microphone acoustic port and camera optical path correctly aligned to the enclosure openings. ● Serviceability: design so the prototype can be opened, reassembled, and rewired without destroying seals. 2.3 Sealing & Assembly ● Gasket groove or O-ring channel design for the housing seam and lens window. ● Fastener plan (screw bosses, heat-set inserts, or captive screws) suited to a printed prototype. ● Clear parting line and assembly sequence; note any features that would need changing for injection molding later. 3. Internal Components to Accommodate Design the internal volume around these components. Exact dimensions and 3D/mechanical files (STEP) for each will be provided on engagement; approximate envelopes are given here for scoping. Component Notes / approx. envelope Main PCB (ESP32-S3 class) ~90 × 60 mm class board; final dims provided. Screw-mounted. LTE modem + antenna Cellular module on PCB; antenna needs metal/battery keep-out. GPS antenna Needs clear upward/sky-facing view path; document placement. Camera module Sensor + lens; optical axis must align with sealed lens window; 180° FOV — avoid enclosure vignetting. IR LED array Around the lens; must project through the window without internal reflection. Microphone Acoustic port to outside; water-resistant mesh/vent. Battery (LiFePO4) Sizable pack; retained, thermally isolated, serviceable. Final dims provided. Accelerometer On PCB; no special opening (wake sensor). Solar panel External surface; wiring routed in through a sealed gland. Connectors / glands 3 power inputs + optional external antenna; all sealed. Critical: camera + IR optical integrity The 180° lens must not be vignetted (blocked at the edges) by the enclosure opening, and IR LEDs must not reflect back into the lens (which causes washout). The lens window and LED geometry are the highest-risk part of this design — please prototype and validate this area first. 4. Design Requirements & Constraints Requirement Target Ingress protection IP67 design intent (sealed seams, glands, gasket/O-ring) Material (prototype) 3D-print material suitable for functional prototype (e.g. ABS/ASA/PETG or SLA resin); note UV consideration Material (production intent) Design toward PA66 / UV-stable engineering plastic for injection molding later Operating temperature −30 °C to +70 °C (design should not rely on tight-tolerance snap fits that fail cold) Size As compact as practical while fitting all components; propose overall envelope Weight Lightweight for single-person installation Mounting Removable/serviceable; secure against road vibration Wall thickness Printable and moldable (uniform where possible; avoid thick sections) 5. Deliverables # Deliverable 1 Native editable CAD source files (e.g. STEP + native format — Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or Onshape). Editable source is required. 2 3D-print-ready STL files for every printed part, oriented and validated (watertight meshes). 3 Full assembly model showing all internal components in place (fit-check). 4 Exploded view + assembly instructions/sequence (PDF or images). 5 2D drawings with key dimensions, tolerances, and the sealing/gasket detail. 6 Bill of mechanical materials: fasteners, inserts, gaskets/O-rings, glands. 7 Short design-rationale note: parting line, antenna keep-outs, thermal, and what would change for injection molding. 6. Milestones & Payment Payment is milestone-gated. Final payment is contingent on delivery of a validated print-ready design and all editable source files. Milestone Deliverable Payment M1 — Concept Rough external concept + internal layout fit-check (all components placed) Deposit M2 — Detailed CAD Full internal+external CAD, sealing detail, lens/IR area resolved Progress M3 — Print-ready Validated STLs, assembly model, exploded view, 2D drawings Progress M4 — Handover Editable source files + mechanical BOM + design-rationale note Final (gated) 7. Required Skills & Experience ● Proven enclosure / product design experience, ideally for electronics or IoT devices. ● Design-for-manufacture knowledge: sealing (IP-rated), gaskets/O-rings, glands, snap/screw assembly. ● Experience designing around PCBs, batteries, and antennas (keep-outs, thermal). ● Fluent in a parametric CAD tool (Fusion 360 / SolidWorks / Onshape) and STL export for 3D printing. ● Bonus: injection-molding DFM experience; camera/optical enclosure experience. ● Able to communicate in English over Zoom (video calls) to discuss the project directly with the client, understand requirements, and review progress. Regular calls are expected. 8. Screening Questions (please answer in your proposal) ● Share 1–2 portfolio examples of enclosures you designed that were built or printed. ● Which CAD tool do you use, and can you deliver editable source (not just STL)? ● How have you handled IP67 sealing on a previous design? ● How would you approach the 180° lens window + IR LED area to avoid vignetting and reflection? ● Estimated timeline and cost to reach a print-ready prototype (M3). ● Are you available for Zoom calls in English, and what are your typical working hours / time zone? Provided on engagement (after NDA) Component STEP files and exact dimensions (PCB, battery, camera, solar panel), the full technical task for context, and any brand/color preferences. An NDA must be signed before component files are shared.

Hello, I reviewed your requirements, and the core challenge is integrating optics, sealing, thermal management, antenna performance, and serviceability into a single enclosure that is reliable as a functional 3D printed prototype while remaining suitable for a future transition to injection molding. Every mechanical decision, from the internal component layout and IP67 sealing strategy to the 180° camera window, IR geometry, mounting system, and assembly sequence, needs to be validated together so the prototype performs correctly before production tooling begins. I have worked on complex electronics enclosure and manufacturing focused product development projects, and I can share relevant examples once we connect in chat. Also a quick question, will the STEP files for the PCB, battery, camera, antennas, and solar panel represent finalized production dimensions, or should the enclosure allow additional tolerance for component revisions during prototyping? Best Regards, Muskan

Hello, The most critical risk is meeting IP67 while keeping antenna performance for an LTE-connected camera and allowing heat dissipation from battery and electronics in a compact, 3D-printable enclosure. If seals or RF paths are handled late, prototypes will either leak or lose cellular range. I designed multiple enclosures for battery-powered outdoor cameras and vehicle telematics units that moved from 3D-printed prototypes to low-volume injection molding. One project was a solar/battery-powered trail camera where I laid out the PCB, battery bay, solar cable feed, and camera module for field testing; another was an LTE telematics modem housing for a light commercial vehicle that required under-hood mounting and antenna separation. Both were printed as STLs, validated for fit, then refined for molding drafts and ribs. I use SolidWorks for parametric models and deliver editable source files, assemblies, and STL outputs. My first step is a constrained internal layout: place battery, PCB, camera, and antennas to minimize cable runs and isolate RF zones, then create a tongue-and-groove lid with continuous gasket channel and serviceable cable gland locations. Thermal paths use internal aluminum boss contact and vents with hydrophobic membrane where needed. I will produce CAD (editable), assembly models, and 3D-print-ready STL optimized for supportless printing and later molding transitions. - Do you have target antenna locations or preferred cellular module form factor? - Are there mounting points on the vehicle (surface type, angle) and a required test temperature range? Happy to hop on a brief call whenever it suits you. Affan Qureshi

Hello there! This is exactly the type of product development project I enjoy..... I appreciate that you're looking for more than an attractive housing; the enclosure must protect sensitive electronics, simplify assembly, and transition smoothly from a 3D-printed prototype to injection molding. I have extensive experience in mechanical product design, CAD modeling, enclosure development, and prototype engineering. My approach is to design around the electronics first, then optimize the enclosure for sealing, manufacturability, serviceability, and long-term reliability. **My plan:** 1. Sign the NDA and review the STEP models, BOM, and mechanical requirements. 2. Develop the enclosure concept while validating the internal layout, PCB mounting, battery retention, and antenna keep-out zones. 3. Design the IP67 sealing features, cable glands, lens window, mounting system, and serviceable fastener arrangement. 4. Resolve the camera and IR LED geometry to eliminate vignetting and internal reflections before completing the enclosure. 5. Optimize the design for 3D printing while documenting the changes required for future injection molding. 6. Deliver editable CAD files, STEP, STL, assembly drawings, BOM, and the complete handover package for each milestone. I'm comfortable working under NDA, collaborating through regular Zoom meetings, and providing milestone updates with renders, design reviews, and engineering documentation throughout the project.
